I hope WWDC 2021 reveals these improvements to the Sleep app on Apple Watch

With WWDC 2021 on the horizon, I want to Sleep app to get an upgrade.

Sleep tracking in wearables has been around for a few years, which is why when watchOS 7 finally included some sleep tracking capabilities, I was pretty excited to see Apple's tackle on the feature. It turns out Apple decided to make the Sleep app a great tool for helping you get to sleep and stay on a sleep schedule, but it's not the most detailed when it comes to tracking. Here are three ways I want watchOS 8 to improve the Sleep app, to make the best Apple Watch even better.

Show us time spent in sleep stages

When you wear your Apple Watch to bed and use the Sleep app in the morning, you'll need to check the Health app on your iPhone to see your data. This data mostly comprises of a simple graph showing you how long you slept. There isn't much data to be had, and while there is lots more that could be included, I think a significant positive change would be to track your time in light, deep, and REM sleep.

Plenty of other wearables already do this, and I think it would make the data a little more robust for people hoping to use the Sleep app to help them have a better insight into their sleep quality. Most people know how long they slept each night, but knowing what stage roughly what stage you're in is something you need monitoring to figure out.

Better battery life

I know, I know, asking for better features that could potentially need the sensors to work more throughout the night and then calling for better battery life is a little rich. What can I say? I like having my cake and eating it too.

Currently, using the Sleep app for an average eight-hour-ish sleep will take anywhere from 20-30% of your Apple Watch battery. It would be nice to see that range brought down a bit. It would just help plan that perfect time to charge your Apple Watch every day a little bit better.

Put heart rate information in the Good Morning view

The Sleep app will use the heart rate monitor on your Apple Watch to take your heart rate throughout the night. If you go into your sleep highlights, you'll see an hourly display of your heart rate as you slept (see picture above). This is great information, even if you do have to dig for it, but once again, it could be more helpful.

I personally would love it if the Good Morning view that pops up on your Apple Watch when you wake up would include your average heart rate throughout the night, your lowest heart rate, and your highest heart rate. It's a small thing, but it could help you get a headstart on diagnosing any problems. As someone whose family medical history includes sleep apnea and other sleep conditions, I'm always looking for a way to get early warning signs.

Might AirPods Max customization actually be a thing this year?

New rumors coming out of Mark Gurman and Bloomberg today have Apple not refreshing AirPods Max this year, which is good for those of us who spent $549 on a pair not so long ago. But Gurman does suggest that we might see new colors announced now that Apple has finally begun to catch up with demand.

Supply has been a real issue for Apple with AirPods Max and actually buying a pair has been more difficult than customers – and Apple – would have liked. In fact, the difficulty with making these things was said to be one of the reasons Apple didn't allow a level of AirPods Max customization at the point of purchase, as had been rumored. Like Apple Watch, users were originally intended to have the option to mix and match colors of AirPods Max. Silver headphones with red ear cups? No problem!

That idea was seemingly canned in late 2020. And then Gurman, today:

The last AirPods-related hardware introduction from Apple was the over-ear AirPods Max headphones in December. That $549 pair earned criticism for bugs and its high price but praise for its materials and sound. Apple only recently caught up with demand for the product, and it is not currently working on a second generation of the AirPods Max, though it has discussed launching additional color variations in the future.

New colors, you say?

If Apple truly is beginning to catch up to demand and AirPods Max are more readily available than ever, is it possible Apple intends to revisit the mix and match approach that it couldn't pull off last year? Imagine Apple announcing new AirPods Max in some funky new colors and saying "oh, and you can customize your AirPods Max just the way you want" at the same time.

Sure sounds like something Apple might do to me!

Until that happens, or assuming you just want a standard color option, there are some AirPods Max deals beginning to crop up. The surest sign yet that stock replenishment is finally outpacing orders, perhaps.

GameSir X2 Bluetooth Mobile Controller: Price and availability

Right off the bat, the GameSir X2 Bluetooth Mobile Controller is available on Amazon for $60, about $40 cheaper than the MSRP for the Razer Kishi for iPhone. It is also more affordable than buying a phone clip with an Xbox or PlayStation controller, though heading the third party route can get you a cheaper controller and clip of questionable quality. The current model is black and gray, with red and blue highlights around the thumbstick, invoking an obvious Switch comparison.

GameSir X2 Bluetooth Mobile Controller: What I like

The X2 Bluetooth Mobile Gaming Controller is as simple as it gets as far as design is concerned. Of course, that's by no means a bad thing. The two sides of the controller are connected by a sliding body, which can easily hold any modern iPhone with ease — no need to swap your phone out of its case. It's not bulky, either. The Bluetooth controller can support phones up to 173mm in length, which comes in at about the length of a Nintendo Switch. I exclusively used my iPhone 11 in my testing and had no problem with it slipping out or being unwieldy.

You'll find everything else you expect from a modern controller

Both back corners of the controller are supported with a rubber grip, which gives it a nice ergonomic fit for extended play sessions. Aside from that, you'll find everything else you expect from a modern controller: Two clickable control sticks, a solid D-pad and face buttons, two shoulder buttons, and two triggers. Everything has a satisfying click when used, especially the D-pad, which is often done wrong. At first, I thought the triggers were a bit shallow, but after a few hours, they grew on me, and I think feels better than the ones on the Switch.

The controller also comes with two Joy-Stick caps that easily fold over the control sticks for added comfort. It also features up to 20 hours of battery life before it needs a charge, but there's no way to charge your phone while it's in the controller.

But what's it like in action?

X2 Bluetooth Mobile Gaming Controller features different Bluetooth signals for both Android and iPhone. It was a little convoluted to understand at first — three different combinations of buttons activate different signals that your iPhone then picks up. It's nice to have the option to use both, as there are many controllers that have you choose one or the other.

Every game worked exceptionally well — no noticeable input lag, no disconnects, and no compromises.

Strangely enough, the controller is detected as an Xbox Controller and works as such. But enough about signals and controller grip, how does it fare when actually playing games? I decided to test out Apple Arcade's offerings first: I tried World of Demons, Hot Lava, Oceanhorn 2: Knights of the Lost Realm, and Samurai Jack, and all of them worked seamlessly.

But you're not interested in Apple Arcade? Well, I tried Call of Duty: Mobile and PUBG Mobile as well, and both worked just fine, and while Xbox Game Pass Cloud Gaming hasn't made a public appearance on the iPhone (the service is still in invite-only beta) I did test the controller against the Stadia version of Immortals: Fenix Rising and Super Bomberman Online. Every game worked exceptionally well — no noticeable input lag, no disconnects, and no compromises.

GameSir X2 Bluetooth Mobile Controller: What I didn't like

Now while the actual hardware is great, the same can't be said about the app. The GameSir app is meant to give you access to GameSir's G-Touch Technology that helps you configure and save controller setups and other various tools for a variety of different games. It's just not intuitive to use, and it makes the whole experience of using the app feel cheap.

But maybe that doesn't matter because the most egregious thing about the app is that it doesn't even work in the current iOS. While this may be updated somewhere down the line, as of this writing, support for the X2 Bluetooth Mobile Gaming Controller is nonexistent. I reached out to GameSir for comment, but they only reconfirmed what I already knew, that G-Touch only supports iOS 13.4 and below. The app is the only way to update the controller's firmware and some electronic manuals, though, so it's useful to keep installed if only for that.

There's also a lack of vibration on the controller can take away a bit from the immersion of the game. I didn't worry too much about the smaller games, but for large-scale games like Immortals: Fenix Rising, I did miss it.

GameSir X2 Bluetooth Mobile Controller: Competition

Clearly, the GameSir's competition is directly the Razer Kishi, a very stylish and functional alternative. It does have a slicker design that makes it feel like a more premium product, as well as an app that, well, works. But it's not Bluetooth ready, and it's usually priced at about $100. The pairing of a phone clip and a game controller is also a worthy alternative, especially if you own an Xbox or PlayStation already, but if you don't, it might not make sense shelling out cash for a controller you'll only use on your phone — not to mention, phone clips aren't exactly the most attractive options.

GameSir X2 Bluetooth Mobile Controller: Should you buy it?

You should buy this if ...

• If you want a comfortable controller for your iPhone.
• If you can't stand touch controls in your games.
• If you want something similar to the Razer Kishi but don't want to spend Razer Kishi money.

You shouldn't buy this if...

• If you absolutely hate Bluetooth.
• If you like customizing your controls.

The GameSir X2 Bluetooth Mobile Controller is a great way to bypass the awkwardness of touch controls at a fair price. This is a worthwhile iPhone controller and a great alternative to the Razer Kishi. The biggest downside comes from the controller's companion app, but it's certainly not enough of a downside to detract from the more than great package.

What is a digital to analog converter (DAC)?

Soon, Apple will stream all 75 million of its Apple Music tracks in Apple Lossless Audio. Some troubleshooting tips for when your updates won't install overnight

Can't get your iPhone to update overnight automatically? Try these troubleshooting tips.

Back in iOS 12, Apple finally gave us the ability to automatically download and install iOS updates overnight, so you could wake up the next day and have your best iPhone all updated and ready to go. Fast forward to today, and iOS 14 now offers a few more options for automatic downloads and has some different requirements, but won't should you do if it doesn't work?

This has happened to me multiple times, and I've woken up in the morning only to say, "Why won't my iPhone automatically install updates overnight?" I wish I could tell you that I have a silver bullet solution for you, but unfortunately, I still sometimes have issues downloading and installing updates automatically. Here are some troubleshooting tips you can try if you're experiencing the same problem.

Troubleshooting tips for automatic install on iOS:

• 1. Make sure the Automatic Updates feature is enabled
• 2. Make sure your iPhone is plugged in
• 3. Make sure your iPhone is connected to Wi-Fi
• 4. Restart your iPhone

1. Make sure the Automatic Updates feature is enabled

There are actually two different options for automatic updates in iOS 14, one for just downloading the update and one for installing the update. You'll need to turn both turned on to download and install new updates overnight. You can turn them on by going Settings > General > Software Update > Automatic Updates and making sure both download and install options are turned on. The switches will be green when the features are enabled.

2. Make sure your iPhone is charging

If you want your iPhone to automatically update overnight, you'll need to make sure your iPhone is charging. That means you'll need it to be plugged in via the Lightning port to a power source or sitting atop a wireless charger. If the update is set to download and install and the iPhone isn't charging, it won't work.

3. Make sure your iPhone is connected to Wi-Fi

The second requirement is for automatic downloads is that your iPhone is connected to Wi-Fi. Ensure that you are connected to the right network, and then your network is functioning with no problem. There are some troubleshooting tips if you're having issues with Wi-Fi on your iPhone. Also, makes sure where you charge your iPhone overnight has a good Wi-Fi signal; I have missed updates before because of a dead zone in my place.

4. Restart your iPhone

Rebooting or restarting your iPhone can sometimes shock the system back into working properly. If you do it right before you go to bed that evening, it may help get the automatic updates back on track. Just remember after restarting to ensure you're connected to the right Wi-Fi network and that the Automatic Updates feature is enabled.

Who are Legendary Titans and Registeel in Pokémon Go?

The Legendary Titans are six golem-like Pokémon with a single type each. The first three, Regirock, Regice, and Registeel were originally encountered in the Hoenn region of Gen III. The fourth, Regigigas, didn't show up until the Sinnoh region of Gen IV, and two more, Regielecki and Regidrago were introduced in the Crown Tundra DLC for Pokémon Sword and Pokémon Shield.

Only the original three will be coming back to Pokémon Go this time, but with the introduction of Mega Pokémon and lots of new Shadow Pokémon, there are a number of winning strategies for Trainers who can coordinate these Raids.

What are the best counters for Registeel in Pokémon Go?

As a pure Steel type, Registeel is weak to Fighting, Fire, and Ground type attacks. It can deal Steel, Fighting, and Normal type damage. If it is possible to do so safely, coordinate with your fellow Raiders to focus on Fire types with Mega Charizard or Mega Houndoom and you'll be golden. If you cannot coordinate safely or don't have the Mega Energy to spare, there are still plenty of winning teams.

Mega Charizard Y

One of Charizard's two Mega Evolved formes, Mega Charizard Y is the top counter for Registeel. As a Fire and Flying type, if has no weaknesses that Registeel can exploit and takes half damage from Registeel's Steel and Fighting type attacks. Plus, it will boost all the other Fire type Pokémon on the field. Whether Mega Evolved, Shadow, or just a standard Charizard, you'll want it to know Fire Spin and Blast Burn for this Raid.

Reshiram

The Legendary mascot of Pokémon Black, Reshiram is an excellent counter for Registeel - assuming you were lucky enough to get one during its time in Raids. Unfortunately, Reshiram made its Pokémon Go debut during a global pandemic so lots of players still don't have one. However, if you do have Reshiram, the Fire and Dragon type takes reduced damage from Steel type moves and has no weaknesses Registeel can exploit. Fire Fang and Overheat are the moves you'll want your Reshiram to know for this Raid.

Mega Charizard X

Although Mega Charizard Y performs better, if you already have Mega Charizard X evolved, it will serve you very well against Registeel. As a Fire and Dragon type, it takes half damage from Registeel's Steel type attacks and has no weaknesses it can exploit. You'll still want your Mega Charizard X to know Fire Spin and Blast Burn.

Chandelure

Originally encountered in the Unova region of Gen V, Chandelure is one of the best Ghost and Fire types in Pokémon Go. Plus, having been featured in multiple events, including both 2020 and 2019's Halloween events, most players have at least one or two already powered up. It resists all of Registeel's attacks too, so it will last a long while in this fight. Fire Spin and Overheat is the moveset you'll want your Chandelure to know.

Mega Houndoom

While both versions of Mega Charizard perform better, if you already have Mega Houndoom ready or are lacking in Mega Charizard Energy, it will perform very well and boost other Fire type Pokémon on the field. A Dark and Fire type originally discovered in the Johto region of Gen II, Mega Houndoom will resist Registeel's Steel type attacks, but it takes double damage from Fighting. If you are bringing Mega Houndoom to this Raid, you'll want Fire Fang for the fast attack and Flamethrower for the charged attack.

Lucario

Originally discovered in the Sinnoh region of Gen IV, Lucario is a great counter for Registeel. Its Fighting and Steel typing mean its vulnerable to Fighting type attacks, but resists Steel and Normal. Unfortunately, the only way to get Lucario in Pokémon Go is evolving its baby stage, Riolu which is one of the rarest egg hatches in the game. It also hasn't had its Mega Evolution unlocked yet, not have any other Fighting types, so it's better to reserve your Lucario for Raids that you cannot coordinate with other Trainers on. Counter and Aura Sphere are the moves you'll want your Lucario to know.

Darmanitan

An unsual Pokémon from the Unova region of Gen V with a regional variant and multiple formes, Darmanitan's standard forme is the one you'll want for this Raid. Darmanitan's first stage, Darumaka is fairly common in Pokémon Go and it only requires 50 Candies to evolve, leaving plenty left over for powering up. As a pure Fire type, Darmanitan resists Registeel's Steel type attacks and has no weaknesses the Steel Titan can exploint. Fire Fang and Overheat is the moveset you'll want for this Raid.

Conkeldurr

Originally discovered in the Unova region of Gen V, Conkeldurr performs well against Registeel in a vacuum. As a pure Fighting type, it brings no notable weaknesses or resistances to this fight and cannot be boosted by the Mega Evolved Pokémon currently available, but if you cannot coordinate with other players, it will serve you well. Its first stage, Timburr is pretty easy to come by in Raids and Wild Spawns, and it benefits from Trade Evolution, leaving plenty of Candies left over for powering up. If you're bringing Conkeldurr to this Raid, you'll want it to know Counter and Dynamic Punch.

Blaziken

The final evolution of Gen III's Fire starter, Blaziken is a great choice for this Raid, even without its Mega Evolution unlocked. This Fire and Fighting type takes reduced damage from Steel type attacks and has no weaknesses Registeel can exploit. It's been feature in Community Day and other events, so most players have a few already powered up. Counter and Blast Burn is the moveset you'll want your Blaziken to know going up against the Steel Titan.

Pyroar

Originally encountered in the Kalos region of Gen VI, Pyroar performs well against Registeel and benefits from Mega Charizard or Mega Houndoom's boosts. As a Fire and Normal type, it resists Steel type attacks, but takes added damage from Fighting type attacks. Pyroar is relatively new to Pokémon Go but its first stage, Litleo was featured in events, Eggs, Raids, and Research, as well as being a relatively common spawn, so most players have had the chance to catch and evolve an entire pride of these flaming lions. If you're bringing Pyroar to this Raid, you'll want Fire Fang for its fast attack and Overheat for the charged attack.

Back ups?

Although most players will be able to make a team of the best counters, if you're finding a gap in your team, there are plenty of back ups who work well in larger groups. Just make sure you're dodging and any of the following could be a decent back up:

• Delphox with Fire Spin and Flamethrower
• Chesnaught with Low Kick and Superpower
• Yveltal with Snarl and Focus Blast
• Pangoro with Low Kick and Close Combat
• Talonflame with Fire Spin and Fire Blast
• Barbacle with Mud-Slap and Cross Chop
• Moltres with Fire Spin and Overheat
• Entei with Fire Fang and Overheat
• Machamp with Counter and Dynamic Punch
• Charizard with Fire Spin and Blast Burn
• Hariyama with Counter and Dynamic Punch
• Arcanine with Fire Fang and Flame Thrower
• Magmortar with Fire Spin and Fire Punch
• Salamence with Fire Fang and Fire Blast
• Mamoswine with Mud-Slap and Bulldoze
• Alakazam with Counter and Focus Blast
• Manectric with Snarl and Flame Burst
• Heatran with Fire Spin and Flamethrower
• Excadrill with Mud-Slap and Drill Run
• Landorus with Mud Shot and Earth Power
• Breloom with Counter and Dynamic Punch
• Flareon with Fire Spin and Overheat
• Groudon with Mud Shot and Earthquake
• Typhlosion with Incinerate and Blast Burn

Shadow Pokémon

The rebalance of Shadow Pokémon rescued from Team GO Rocket make them excellent glass cannons. Not only are their stats boosted, but during special events or with Elite TMs, it's possible to change their moves. If you happen to have any of the following Pokémon with the right moveset, they will work very well in this Raid:

• Shadow Moltres with Fire Spin and Overheat
• Shadow Entei with Fire Fang and Overheat
• Shadow Machamp with Counter and Dynamic Punch
• Shadow Charizard with Fire Spin and Blast Burn
• Shadow Hariyama with Counter and Dynamic Punch
• Shadow Arcanine with Fire Fang and Flame Thrower
• Shadow Magmortar with Fire Spin and Fire Punch
• Shadow Salamence with Fire Fang and Fire Blast
• Shadow Mamoswine with Mud-Slap and Bulldoze
• Shadow Alakazam with Counter and Focus Blast
• Shadown Manectric with Snarl and Flame Burst

Note: Shadow Moltres, Shadow Entei, and Shadow Machamp outperform every other Pokémon except Mega Charizard Y. Shadow Charizard, Shadow Hariyama, Shadow Arcanine, Shadow Magmortar and Shadow Salamence also perform on par with the other best counters. If you are able to coordinate the use of either Mega Charizard or Mega Houndoom, they will boost other Fire types making them perform even better.

How many players does it take to beat Registeel in Pokémon Go?

With the best possible counters, two high level players can take out Registeel alone; however, if you're lacking the best counters or are a lower level, you may need four or five Trainers.

Weather conditions that can impact this Raid include:

• Snow will boost Registeel's Steel type attacks.
• Partly Cloudy weather will boost its Normal type attacks.
• Cloudy weather will boost Registeel's Fighting type attacks, as well as your Fighting type counters.
• Sunny/Clear weather will boost both your Fire and Ground type counters.
