Big new Schooly update adds an Apple Watch app and a Mac app

What you need to know

  • Schooly has seen its first big refresh, adding new features along the way.
  • Schooly is now available on Apple Watch and Mac for the first time.
  • Students can download and use Schooly for free.

Make school easier with this iPhone, iPad, Mac, and Apple Watch app.

If you're at school and need to keep track of timetables, assignments, and more, Schooly is the app you need in your life. And now nit has a big new update out that adds support for fresh Mac and Apple Watch apps.

I covered Schooly last year but the app recently saw its first big update and it's such a big update that it's essentially a new app. In fact, it's more than one new app — for the first time, there are now Apple Watch and Mac apps joining the existing iPhone and iPad options.

At its core, Schooly still promises "school, made easier" and that's never a bad thing. People can add their timetable and more to the app and never worry about missing a class or assignment again.

Schooly's features include:

  • Manage multiple timetables with support for repeating weeks and block schedule timetables.
  • Automatic day switching on each timetable
  • Manage teachers and classrooms
  • iCloud Sync
  • Siri Shortcuts
  • Widgets
  • Keyboard Shortcuts
  • Split View support
  • Cursor Integration
  • Multiple App Icons ;)

The newly updated Schooly is proving very popular in the App Store right now and is available as a free download with an optional in-app purchase unlocking the ability to export due work, use Siri Shortcuts to add work, add work via the Apple Watch, and more.

Pokémon Scarlet and Violet may see another Dexit

You may want to make peace with your favorite Pocket Monsters being excluded.

What you need to know

  • Pokémon Sword and Shield were the first mainline games to exclude Pokémon and the National Pokédex.
  • Two new games, Pokémon Scarlet and Violet, were announced during the February 2022 Pokémon Presents.
  • Some statements by The Pokémon Company suggest that not all creatures may be available in Pokémon Scarlet and Violet.

One of the biggest controversies surrounding Pokémon Sword and Shield was the fact that not all Pokémon could be obtainable or transferred over into those games. Dubbed "Dexit" by the Pokémon community, it spurred a lot of calls for boycotts and for Game Freak to change their policies.

During the February 2022 Pokémon Presents, Game Freak announced a new pair of Pokémon games set in what appears to be Spain, called Pokémon Scarlet and Violet. Featuring a cat Grass-type, a crocodile Fire-type, and a duck Water-type starter Pokémon, these games are reportedly open-world, similar to Pokémon Legends: Arceus.

However, a report by Serebii.net takes note of a statement made that suggests history repeating itself.

The tweet features a screenshot of an image which states:

Each game that can receive Pokémon via Pokémon HOME can receive only Pokémon that can be obtained in that particular game. To find out what Pokémon appear in Pokémon Scarlet and Pokémon Violet, please look forward to the release of those games.

While this doesn't outright confirm that exclusion of certain Pokémon, nor does it indicate which ones may be excluded, it does state that it's a possibility that some Pokémon transferred into Pokémon HOME may need to remain on that platform until another game features those particular creatures. There are nearly 1000 Pokémon in existence now, so it is possible that Game Freak may not have the time or capacity to include them all in the newest games. We'll be sure to keep you updated on any news regarding this issue.

Learn all about Pokémon Gen IX and its cat, crocodile, and duck starters

Gen IX is coming to Nintendo Switch in 2022.

Pokémon fans don't have to wait very long before playing the next entry in the core Pokémon RPG series. Pokémon Scarlet and Violet have been announced for Nintendo Switch and will be releasing later in 2022. We've already gotten to see some really cool parts of the game including what the starters look like, where the game is located, and more.

Pokémon Scarlet and Violet trailer

Pokémon Scarlet and Violet was first announced during the February 2022 Pokémon Presents.

Pokémon Scarlet and Violet starters

Starter Type & Description
Sprigatito Grass Type. The capricious, attention-seeking Grass Cat Pokémon
Fuecoco Fire Type. The laid-back Fire Croc Pokémon that does things at its own pace.
Quaxly Water Type. The earnest and tidy Duckling Pokémon.

Pokémon Scarlet and Violet Which Pokémon are in it?

As was started with Pokémon Sword and Shield, not all Pokémon from previous games will be in this entry. We've made a list of all Pokémon in Scarlet and Violet based on what we've already seen in trailers and promo images and will continue to add to it as we learn more. As of yet, we do not know any version exclusives, but we'll keep an eye out for that information.

Pokémon Scarlet and Violet Is this an Open World game?

Yes! The official Pokémon website even states that this adventure takes place in a "richly expressed open world." It looks like players will visit several large open spaces with plenty of Pokémon from different Gens to catch.

Pokémon Scarlet and Violet location

The last several Pokémon games have been inspired by different real-life locations around the world. For instance, Pokémon Sword and Shield was inspired by the UK while X and Y were inspired by France. While we don't have any official announcement on where Scarlet and Violet take place yet, there are some strong hints that the game takes place in Spain. Case in point, the large building shown in the trailer that looks similar to Sagrada Familia. The names for the three starters seem to have Spanish roots as well, further lending to this theory.

Differences between versions

There are bound to be several notable differences including version exclusive Pokemon between Scarlet and Violet. So far, we know that players will start off with different colored clothes based no what version they get. As you can imagine, those who play Scarlet will have a red tie and red shorts while those who play Violet will have a purple tie and purple shorts. The look and design of the clothes themselves is relatively similar otherwise, but it slightly different depending on if you choose a boy or girl avatar. We'll add more difference as we learn of them.

Pokémon Scarlet and Violet release date

Pokémon Scarlet and Violet will release sometime in 2022, but no exact release date has been given yet. It's likely to release in November considering that has historically been when core Pokémon RPGs release.

The next big Pokémon adventure

This looks like it's going to be an amazing game and we at iMore cannot wait to play it. All three starters look amazing, so it's definitely going to be a hard decision to make.

We'll continue to keep our eyes out and will update this page as we learn more about Scarlet and Violet.

During challenging times, should we be discussing the next iPhone?

Apple's likely to announce a new iPhone, iPad, and Mac in the coming days. And yet, most folks around the world probably aren't focused on Apple's springtime plans right now. Wars, especially those in Europe, have a way of refocusing attention away from new consumer products most of us probably don't need. As Stephen Warwick tweeted late last week, unfolding events make "writing about phones and apps feel very not important all of a sudden." But here we are.

If the many rumors are correct, Apple could soon reveal the next iPhone SE, next-gen iPad Air, refreshed 13-inch MacBook Pro, and new Mac mini. That's a lot of announcements so early in a calendar year, which suggests some of the chatter might be incorrect. (Don't be surprised if some of these announcements won't happen until the Worldwide Developers Conference in June.)

March event?

Of the four possible would-be products mentioned above, the new 13-inch MacBook Pro could prove the most interesting. Coming just months after the radically improved 14-inch and 16-inch MacBook Pro, this model (the current one) holds an odd place in the overall MacBook lineup. Ultimately, it will be interesting to see what's lacking on the new 13-inch model compared to those beasts. Most likely, it will feature the same body as its predecessor with a few new goodies inside, including an all-new "M2" Apple silicon chip.

And then there's what will be the fifth-generation iPad Air. Apple has used this mid-priced tablet as a testing ground for new features in recent years. The current model, for example, was the first iPad to offer Touch ID in the Home button. It was also the first Apple tablet available in colors that went beyond silver, space gray, and rose gold.

Will the new iPad Air include Face ID or stick with Touch ID? Will it feature Apple M1 silicon like the 2021 iPad Pro or include the A15 found inside the well-received 2021 iPad mini? Finally, will this be the year Apple finally resurrects bondi blue, grape, and maybe strawberry on color choices on new devices? I'm predicting modest design changes with fresh new colors — and a price hike. And it will quickly become one of the best iPads to date.

Rumors continue to suggest Apple's first event of 2022 will happen next Tuesday, March 8. Once again, the event is expected to be pre-recorded from the Apple Park campus. Stay tuned for the next iPhone!

Poor Intel

Elsewhere, Intel apparently plans to create new chips that will rival the performance offered on the 14-inch MacBook Pro. However, the new Arrowlake chips aren't expected to arrive until late summer 2023. Of course, Apple will probably have launched an even better 14-inch MacBook Pro model by that point, keeping Intel well behind.

Regardless, it's nice to see Intel finally taking Apple silicon seriously. That attitude could go a long way in bringing future Windows-based machines closer to what Apple's offering with Mac.

Tipping my toes into VR

A few weeks ago, this Apple fanboy finally broke down and purchased a VR device. Early on, I have found Facebook's Meta Oculus Quest 2 headset much more useful (and fun) than I expected, especially when it comes to fitness use.

Based on this, I am now even more excited to see what Apple has planned for VR. The iPhone maker's first VR headset, due before the end of the year, is expected to feature Micro OLED and include its own operating system. No doubt, price, game support, and how the headset compares to what Facebook's doing will go a long way in deciding whether Apple quickly becomes the VR leader or an also-ran. I can't wait for the latest battle between Apple and Facebook to begin!

It's been an interesting week and one that won't be forgotten soon. Thanks for reading, be safe, and see you soon.

- Bryan

Nintendo recap: Minecraft amiibo delayed, Majora's Mask on Switch, and more

Plus, it turns out the Wii U server is shutting down, so redownloads won't be possible in a year or two.

Hello, hello and welcome to another Nintendo recap! This week flew by, probably because so much happened in the Nintendo world and the world of video games in general. For one thing, we finally got The Legend of Zelda: Majora's Mask on Nintendo Switch. In other news, more information was revealed about the 3DS and Wii U eShops shutting down, which has us worried. Plus, there's going to be a Pokémon Presents broadcast on Sunday and we can't wait to see what gets revealed. There's even more to discuss, so let's dive in.

Pokémon Presents on Sunday

The Pokémon Company is hosting a 14-minute broadcast on Sunday, Feb. 28 at 6 a.m. PT/9 a.m. ET/11 p.m. JST. Sunday is kind of a strange day for news like this to drop. Historically, the yearly Pokémon Presents takes place on or around Pokémon Day, the anniversary of when the first Pokémon games, Red and Green, dropped in Japan back in 1996. However, past broadcasts have been on Fridays or during the week even when the actual Pokémon Day was on the weekend.

No information on what the show will actually cover has been revealed as of yet. However, there are a few previously announced projects that the Pokémon Company hasn't updated us on in a while, such as Pokémon Sleep and the Detective Pikachu video game sequel following the successful first game on 3DS and the movie starring Ryan Reynolds. Maybe we'll finally learn something about them.

Of course, Game Freak is undoubtedly working on another core Pokémon RPG, but whether or not we'll actually see anything for Gen 9 during the broadcast is debatable. It's always good to keep expectations low, but the first Pokémon Presents of the year often announces brand new titles and prepares fans for what's to come throughout the rest of the year, so anything is possible. For example, last year's February Pokémon Presents, announced the Brilliant Diamond and Shining Pearl remakes along with the brand new Legends: Arceus. So be prepared for anything and I'll cover whatever gets announced.

Full server shutdowns of Wii U and 3DS eShops will prevent redownloads

Last week, we learned that the 3DS and Wii U eShops are closing in 2023. with the ability to add funds to your accounts cutting off in just a few months from now. It turns out that Nintendo has been waiting to close down the Wii U eShop since 2014, according to a Nintendo of America employee.

As reported by, NintendoLife, "Nintendo looks at the first 2 years as the indicator of when to start packing it in with a console" and consideering how poorly the Wii U sold, Nintendo has been eager to close down its services but have refrained from doing so until now to avoid a 'class action.'" According to the employee, "Nintendo knows it has to support a product for a minimum of 10 years" or it can find itself in legal trouble.

Turns out that as part of this, Nintendo could be shutting down the servers for the Wii U as early as 2023. This means that even if you download all of the games you've purchased before the Wii U eShop closes, if something happens to your console after the servers have gone down, you'll be unable to redownload your purchased games or their updates. This being the case, any games currently only available on Wii U will eventually make any Wii U that has them valuable.

Min Min amiibo release date announced and Minecraft amiibo delayed

We're still waiting on a handful of Super Smash Bros. Ultimate amiibo to release now that all of the DLC fighters have been revealed, ending with a bang on Sora from Kingdom Hearts. But this week, Nintendo finally revealed that the Min Min amiibo is set to release on April 29. Unfortunately, we also learned that the Steve and Alex amiibo, which were previously announced for spring 2022, have been delayed to some time later this year due to "a logistics and production delay."

While it's sad that we're going to have to wait a while longer, it's good to finally have a better timeline for upcoming releases. Four additional amiibo will eventually release after the Steve and Alex amiibo: an amiibo for Sephiroth from Final Fantasy, Pyra/Mythra from Xenoblade Chronicles 2, Kazuya from Tekken, and Sora from Kingdom Hearts. After that, the Smash line is over. However, given how slowly release dates and production has been going, they probably won't all release until another year or two.

Wonder Boy Collection announced for Switch

Last week I mentioned that something called the Wonder Boy Collection had been given an ESRB rating for Nintendo Switch and PS4. Well this week, the collection was officially announced!

It contains four retro games: Wonder Boy (arcade), Wonder Boy in Monster Land (arcade), Wonder in Monster World (Sega Genesis), and Monster World IV (Sega Genesis). So if you haven't played these hits or haven't played them in a long time, you can pick them up. No official date has been given, but the Amazon UK page says it releases on June 3.

According to the Wonder Boy Collection page on Amazon, the games will include "modern features such as the ability to rewind your game at any moment," which will make performing some of those tricky platforming manuevers easier. A few Wonder Boy games have recently been remastered for current-gen consoles including my two favorites: Monster Boy and the Cursed Kingdom and Wonder Boy: The Dragon's Trap. If you haven't played these yet I highly recommend you check them out as well.

Majora's Mask came to Switch

The Legend of Zelda: Majora's Mask is the latest N64 game to drop onto the Nintendo Switch Online + Expansion Pack. Majora's Mask was a direct sequel to the extremely popular Ocarina of Time, but didn't sell as well as the first game. However, it has become a cult classic among Nintendo fans.

This adventure introduces young Link to the very dark world of Termina, doomed by the ever growing presence of the falling moon. The end goal is to stop the Majora's Mask from causing mischief and destruction. Throughout the story, Link learns to transform into a Deku Shrub, Zora, and Goron using masks, which gives him special powers like the ability to hover, swim fast, and roll quickly.

The reason Majora's Mask stands out from other N64 games is that it offers complicated time-travel mechanics that were way before their time. NPCs go to specific locations at specific times throughout the game's three-day period, so in order to complete some sidequests you need to follow up with an NPC at the right moments. Special songs played on the Ocarina allow you to effect the flow of time. There's plenty to uncover and explore as you set domino effects in motion. I highly recommend playing it if you haven't done so before or if it's been a long time.

Luigi's Mansion developer working on Mario Strikers: Battle League

With the latest Nintendo Direct, we learned that Mario Strikers: Battle League is coming to Nintendo Switch on June 10. This super-charged soccer-ish game will be the third entry in the series. This week, we got confirmation that Next Level Games, the developers who worked on the first two games and the Luigi's Mansion series, are once more behind it's creation. As such, we can likely expect great things from Battle League.

Have a great weekend!

In the words of the esteemed pig, "that's all folks," for now anyway. We're drawing closer and closer to the launch of the highly anticipated Triangle Strategy as well as Kirby and the Forgotten Land, which both release in March. So I'll be certain to cover those games as they release.

But before then, I hope you have a restful weekend filled with some fun video games.

Until next time.

- Rebecca Spear
