The rate of new apps on the Mac App Store is declining

What you need to know

  • New apps on the Mac App Store have declined 12% in the last year.
  • The number of new apps per month currently sits at around 343.
  • The iOS App Store, in comparison, launches around 40,000 new apps per month.

The iPhone and iPad are still the place to be.

The Mac App Store still isn't feeling the love like the App Store for the iPhone and iPad do.

New data collected by Appfigures found that not only is the number of new apps on the Mac App Store very low in comparison to the App Store for iOS, the rate of new apps coming onto the store continues to decline.

According to the report, 392 new apps were released per month on the Mac App Store in 2020. In comparison, over 40,000 new apps were released on the App Store per month. In 2021, the average amount of new apps per month on the Mac App Store dropped to 343, a 12% decrease.

In 2020, developers released, on average, 392 new apps to the Mac App Store every month. The actual figures range between the low 300s and low 400s, so the average is a fair estimate.

For context, there App Store saw 40,000 new apps on average every month in 2020. That's 100x more.

But our story continues because so far in 2021, the average number of new Mac apps has dropped to 343, with the variance growing drastically and the low end dropping into the low 200s.

Apple has been attempting to boost the excitement around the Mac App Store lately. Most notably, the company announced that Apple silicon-based Macs, like the M1, would be able to run iPhone and iPad apps if developers did a little bit of work to bring them over.

That plan has resulting in some apps coming over from iPhone and iPad. For example, Twitter brought its social media app to the Mac. However, other big names like Facebook, Instagram, Snapchat, and TikTok haven't.

Crossy Road is coming soon to Apple Arcade

What you need to know

  • Crossy Road is coming to Apple Arcade.
  • According to Apple, the title has been reimagined for the game subscription service.

You can set a reminder for when it launches now.

Crossy Road, the beloved iPhone platformer, is coming to Apple Arcade.

Today, Apple Arcade announced on Twitter that the hilarious title is coming to Apple Arcade as Crossy Road+. According to Apple, the game has been "reimagined for Apple Arcade," but it's currently unclear exactly what changes are in store just yet.

Why did the chicken cross the road? If only @HipsterWhaleDev told us the secret to get to the other side. Jump and cluck across the streets, but watch out for obstacles along the way!

Crossy Road+ won't be the first title that game developer Hipster Whale released a title on Apple Arcade. The company also released Crossy Road Castle exclusively on Apple Arcade back in February of 2020.

If you'd like to be one of the first to get Crossy Road+ when it launches on Apple Arcade, you can preorder it now on the App Store. Preordering the title will download it automatically to your iPhone or iPad once the title goes live on Apple's game subscription service. Interestingly it does not say that it will be available on Apple TV yet, an oddity since the original release is.

Apple Arcade is the company's game subscription service which already boasts more than 100 games and is quickly approaching 200. The service costs $4.99 per month and can be shared with Family Sharing. It is also included in all tiers of the company's Apple One subscription bundles.

Analyst Katy Huberty talks Apple Car, Tim Cook's legacy in new interview

What you need to know

  • Morgan Stanley analyst Katy Huberty sat down for an interview on the Apollo Effect podcast series.
  • The analyst talked about why and when Apple will release an electric car.
  • Huberty also reflected on what Steve Jobs would think about Tim Cook's leadership of Apple.

Huberty has nice things to say about Apple and Cook all around.

In a recent episode of the Apollo Effect podcast series, Morgan Stanley analyst Katy Huberty talked about Apple Car, Tim Cook's leadership, and what Steve Jobs would think of where Apple is now.

As reported by MacRumors, Huberty speculated that the successful car of the future would integrate hardware, software, and services - a combination that Apple is known for.

"When you think about what will differentiate the car of the future, it's certainly being creative around new supply chains ... It's about vertical integration of different components, hardware design, software, and ultimately, the services that can be delivered in that automobile. It's about consumer trust and credibility, and certainly brand when it comes to a consumer product. And all of those categories are ones where Apple is a leader."

The analyst also talked about Tim Cook's leadership, saying that Steve Jobs would be proud of the way that Cook forged his own path while still protecting the culture of innovation that Jobs infused into the company.

"I really think that Tim Cook has done a pretty phenomenal job allowing for Steve's legacy to carry on, protecting that legacy while building his own very separate legacy ... Steve was very much about design and innovation and getting in the weeds in those two areas. Tim has allowed the culture of the company to continue on that front, but at the same time, he's layered in some of the softer aspects that are harder to measure."

"I think if Steve was looking down, he would be very proud of the way that Tim has built his own legacy while protecting the culture and the differentiation around design and innovation that Steve started."

Cook recently celebrated his 10th year as CEO of Apple. According to a recent report, the executive wants to launch one more product category before his retirement.

That product category will most likely have to do with augmented or virtual reality rather than an Apple Car, as the latter is not expected to launch until closer to 2030.

No More Heroes 3 is ridiculously fun — here's everything you need to know!

Travis returns in an all-new hack and slash adventure.

The No More Heroes series is responsible for some of the best action games on the Nintendo Switch, so it's no surprise that many Nintendo Switch owners are stoked about the latest entry in the series. No More Heroes 3 a hack and slash adventure by fan-favorite game designer, Suda 51, and puts Travis Touchdown in the hero role for once — well, maybe. Here's everything you need to know about No More Heroes 3.

What is the plot of No More Heroes 3?

Aliens have destroyed a major city and have made themselves comfortable on earth. With no one to oppose them, the aliens decide to host an Intergalactic Superhero Ranking Tournament to decide earth's fate. Travis must wield his beam katana once more and fight his way to the top to save the world. The game takes place two years after Travis Strikes Again in Santa Destroy, Travis Touchdown's hometown.

What is gameplay like?

Travis takes part in the tournament to save the world, but he just can't fight in the tournament. No, that would be easy. Instead, Travis is forced to take on odd jobs in order to pay for the entry fee like mowing the lawn, or unclogging toilets. Afterward, you'll have to fight in various challenges that are based on many different videogame genres.

Travis will regularly use the Death Glove from Travis Strikes Again as a way to upgrade and customize his move set. We can expect a lot of over-the-top action aside ordinary real-life activities to the brilliantly absurd scenarios the No More Heroes series is known for.

Are there motion controls?

Fans of the original No More Heroes and its sequel No More Heroes 2: Desperate Struggle are well acquainted with the game's motion controls. Well, you'll be happy to know that motion controls are available in No More Heroes 3. Use the Joy-Cons to hack, slash, suplex, and mow the grass. Technology is sick!

What characters are in No More Heroes 3?

There are several memorable characters in No More Heroes 3, but these are the most important ones.

  • Damon Riccitiello - The CEO of Utopinia, a tech empire and childhood friend of FU.
  • Shinobu Jacobs - She has a love/hate releationship with Travis and displays it with her sword.
  • Henry Cooldown - Travis's twin brother and rival.
  • Sylvia Christel - A former agent at the United Assassins Association who now serves as a secretary at Utopinia.
  • FU - An alien out to conquer the world.
  • Badgirl - Was killed by Travis long ago but "got better".
  • Mr. Blackhole - A wormhole bandit who was in Travis Strikes Again, but in another form.

Do I need to play the previous No More Heroes games?

No More Heroes 3 is the third installment in the main series (and fourth in the series overall), but do you have to play the previous games in the series to fully appreciate No More Heroes 3? Well, yes and no. While the story does follow the exploits of Travis Touchdown after the events of the previous games, the plots of each game are standalone pretty well. However, there are plenty of characters from previous games that do appear, and Travis Strikes Again does expand the No More Heroes lore in a huge way, so if you don't want to miss any detail in No More Heroes 3, you'll want to play the previous titles.

Luckily for you, No More Heroes, No More Heroes 2: Desperate Struggle, and Travis Strikes Again: No More Heroes are all available to download on the Nintendo eShop now.

Purchase options

You can preorder No More Heroes 3 now for $60, or you can hunt down the Deluxe and Collector's editions of the game.

The Collector's Edition includes a cardboard box with silver pantone, the physical game, a 96-page artbook, 4 lithographs, and a numbered certificate of authenticity. It includes a "large format" box, the physical game, a vinyl soundtrack, a 96-page artbook, 4 large-format lithographs, and a certificate of authenticity signed by Suda51.

Apple releases revised version of week-old AirTag firmware update

What you need to know

  • Apple has released AirTag firmware version 1A291c.
  • The update is a revised version of 1A291a which was released last week.
  • It is unclear what is changed in the revised version.

AirTag firmware version 1A291a only lasted a week.

AirTag is getting firmware updates two weeks in a row.

Spotted by MacRumors, Apple has released a revised version of the AirTag firmware update that was originally released last week.

Apple today released a revised version of the AirTags firmware that was first provided to AirTags owners last week. The new internal build number is 1A291c, up from 1A291a.

It's currently unclear why Apple adjusted the previously released firmware update and we'll likely never know. Apple does not provide release notes for firmware releases so there's no way to tell what is new with the update like we can with software releases. It is safe to say that the updates contain the usual bug fixes and performance improvements.

There is no way to manually initiate a firmware update for AirTag, but keeping it near your iPhone should start the update in the background on its own at some point.

If you want to check if your AirTag is running the latest firmware version, you can follow the instructions below:

  1. Open the Find My app
  2. Tap on the Items tab
  3. Choose an AirTag
  4. Tap on the name of the AirTag

If you want to take your AirTag experience to the next level, check out our list of the Best accessories for AirTags 2021.

Apple AirTag

Bottom line: For iPhone owners, this is the best item tracker on the market right now. With simple pairing and easy-to-use software, AirTags are a kind excellent Apple product of the same vintage as Apple's AirPod family.

You can now download the sixth public beta for macOS Monterey

macOS Monterey, the next generation of Mac software, is now available as a public beta.

The time has come. You can now download the macOS Monterey public beta 6 on your Mac. It's not an overly complicated process, but we're here to walk you through it and if you need it, a place to get extra help. All the best Macs are compatible with macOS Monterey.

Apple occasionally offers updates to iOS, iPadOS, watchOS, tvOS, and macOS as closed developer previews or public betas. While the betas contain new features, they also contain pre-release bugs that can prevent the normal use of your iPhone, iPad, Apple Watch, Apple TV, or Mac, and are not intended for everyday use on a primary device. That's why we strongly recommend staying away from developer previews unless you need them for software development, and using the public betas with caution. If you depend on your devices, wait for the final release.

How to make a backup of your Mac

Before joining the public beta, you need to make a backup of your Mac. That way, if something goes wrong, or if you're not happy and want to revert to macOS Big Sur, you can go right back to where you started.

Even if you back up every night, you'll want to make double, triple sure you're covered. So make a manual backup now. Here's how to do it with Time Machine. If you use something different or additional, like SuperDuper!, make sure you manually start a backup now.

  1. Click on the Time Machine icon in your Mac Menubar.
  2. Click on Backup now.

Let the backup finish before proceeding.

Note: If you're not averse to the Terminal, you can also make a bootable macOS Big Sur installer as a way to jumpstart reversion, if needed.

How to register your account for the macOS public beta

If you've already joined a public beta for macOS in the past, you don't need to register again for macOS Monterey. Sign in with the same Apple ID. If you've never joined a public beta before, you'll need to start by signing up with your Apple ID.

  1. Go to beta.apple.com in Safari on your Mac.
  2. Click on Sign up to get started. (If you've already signed up for a previous public beta, Click on Sign in and skip to "How to enroll your Mac" below.)
  3. Enter your Apple ID email address and password.
  4. Click Sign in.

Once you're signed up and signed in, it's time to start downloading.

How to enroll your Mac in the macOS public beta

Downloading the macOS Monterey public beta is done through System Preferences in the Software Updates.

  1. Go to beta.apple.com, if you're not there already.
  2. Click on the macOS tab if it's not highlighted already.
  3. Click the Download macOS Public Beta Access Utility button.
  4. Open the file from your Downloads window.
  5. Double-click the package to run the installer.

When the installer is finished downloading, System Preferences will automatically open to the Software Updates section. Click Update to download and install the public beta software. After the software has been downloaded, your Mac will automatically restart.

If the latest public beta does not appear on the Updates list, restart your Mac. Then, open System Preferences and click the Software Updates pane.

The public beta update can take a long time to finish downloading, depending on the size. You can check the status in the Software Updates preference pane of System Preferences.

How to install the macOS public beta

The macOS public beta installer will automatically open when it's downloaded. If it doesn't, or if you prefer to do it later, you open Install macOS Public Beta at any time via Spotlight or Launchpad or from the Application folder in the Finder.

  1. Launch Install macOS Public Beta app if it's not launched already.
  2. Click Continue at the bottom.
  3. If prompted to make a backup and you didn't before, click Continue in the drop-down. If you just made a backup, click Cancel.
  4. Click Continue at the bottom once your backup completes or if you skipped it.
  5. Click Agree to accept the licensing terms.
  6. Click Agree again to confirm.
  7. Click on the drive you want to install onto (if you have multiple options, most people won't.)
  8. Click Install.
  9. Enter your administrator password and click OK.
  10. Click Restart (if your Mac doesn't restart automatically, or you don't want to wait).

Once your Mac reboots, it'll be running the macOS public beta. There's a brief bit of setup you'll need to go through, however, as the system will have changed enough that it'll need your login to complete the update.

Once that's done, you'll be ready to rock macOS Monterey.

How to update to a new version of the macOS public beta

To download updates of the macOS public beta from now on:

  1. Open System Preferences from your Dock or Applications folder.
  2. Click Software Update.
  3. Click Update Now if there is an update available for your Mac.
  4. Click the checkbox next to Automatically keep my Mac up to date if you want your Mac to download and install software updates in the future automatically.

Are there any Nintendo Switch Online exclusive games?

Occasionally, Nintendo releases a special Nintendo Switch online exclusive game. Currently, the two games available are Tetris 99 and Pac-Man 99, two unique takes on the battle royal genre.

July 28, 2021: Three new games for SNES fans to enjoy

Some shape-changing games are now on Switch and ready to blow your mind! Jelly Boy, Claymates, and Bombuzal are now available on the SNES online games.

When Jelly Boy was initially released in 1995, it was only available in Europe. This allows American players to try out a "new" classic. In this platformer, you can change shape as you go through levels trying to collect puzzle pieces that will allow you to escape.

Another platformer added to the list is Claymates. As Clayton, you are trying to rescue your father and the serum he invented. You can change into five different animal figures that will help you along the way.

Finally, Bombuzal is a puzzle game where you have a limited amount of time to set down a bomb to be detonated and get to safety so you can reach the next level.

May 26, 2021: 5 more games will be added to the collection

Four SNES games and one NES join the collection on May 26th, bringing the total number of classic games available to 104.

February 17, 2021: The first update of 2021

The SNES collection continues to grow with three new games: Prehistorik Man, Doomsday Warrior, and Psycho Dream. The NES received one new game in the form of Fire 'n Ice.

December 18, 2020: The DK Trilogy is complete

December brought Donkey Kong Country 3 to the Nintendo Switch, completing the Donkey Kong Country trilogy. Take control of Dixie Kong and Kiddy Kong as they battle Kremlins to save Donkey Kong and Diddy Kong.

Other new additions include the SNES games The Ignition Factor, Super Valis IV, and Tuff E Nuff. Nightshade was the lone NES addition.

September 23, 2020: Play more Mario and Donkey Kong

This month, Nintendo Switch Online adds the SNES platformer Donkey Kong Country 2: Diddy's Kong Quest. Players will try to rescue Donkey Kong from the clutches of Kaptain K. Rool with the help of Dixie Kong and plenty of animal friends while also exploring hidden areas to search for collectibles.

The other new additions are the SNES puzzle game Mario's Super Picross and beat-'em-up The Peace Keepers, and NES sci-fi shoot-'em-up S.C.A.T.: Special Cybernetic Attack Team. The service now has a total of 90 titles.

July 15, 2020: Take a trip to Donkey Kong Country

The classic SNES platformer Donkey Kong Country hit the Nintendo Switch Online service this month along with two other titles, bringing the service's collection to 85 games. Play solo, competitively, or cooperatively controlling Donkey or Diddy Kong as you explore more than 100 levels filled with collectibles and secrets.

Also new for July is the dungeon-delving isometric action NES RPG The Immortal. The SNES list now includes Natsume Championship Wrestling, which lets you play one of 12 fighters and learn more than 50 moves as you fight other players or the AI.

May 14, 2020: Panel de Pon is finally available outside of Japan

For May, the Nintendo Switch Online service is adding a total of four games to the NES and SNES libraries. Rygar on NES, with Wild Guns, Operation Logic Bomb, and Panel de Pon on SNES.

Panel de Pon is a particularly unique addition because this game was originally never released outside of Japan. Gunpei Yokoi initially designed this classic SNES puzzle game. Still, outside of Japan, it was simply called Tetris Attack, and the anime art style was replaced with Nintendo characters from Yoshi's Island. So while it was technically released outside Japan in some form, it wasn't the original game. So for many, this new addition will be the first time to experience the true Panel de Pon.

Rygar is a mythical action game from Tecmo, Wild Guns is a western shooter from Natsume, and Operation Logic Bomb is an overhead shooter from Jaleco.

All of these games will be available on May 20, 2020.

Feb 19, 2020: Pop'n TwinBee and Smash Tennis are finally available in the U.S.

There are a total of four new games arriving in the NES and SNES app for active Nintendo Switch Online members. The games are: Shadow of the Ninja (NES), Eliminator Boat Duel (NES), Pop'n TwinBee (SNES), and Smash Tennis (SNES). Pop'n TwinBee and Smash Tennis have never been released in North America until now.

Pop'n TwinBee is a vertical scrolling top-down shooter from Konami that was initially released in 1993 in Japan and PAL regions, but never once made its way to the United States. Smash Tennis, also known as Super Family Tennis in Japan, is made by Namco and came out in 1993. The name became Smash Tennis when it was released in Europe in 1994.

September 10, 2019: SNES games join the service!

Nintendo announced in a Direct last week that Nintendo Switch Online would now feature SNES games as well as NES games, revealing a whopping 20 titles to join the service in the initial wave, with more to come in the future.

May 12, 2019: More classic games on the way

Three additional games will be added to the queue, including Donkey Kong Jr., VS. Excitebike, and Clu Clu Land. Each of these classics is a welcome addition to Nintendo Switch Online's ever-expanding collection.

March 13, 2019: New titles have arrived in the ever-expanding NES library for Nintendo Switch Online users

So far this year, Nintendo has gifted us with plenty of great new options in the NES library for NSO. We received Blaster Master and Zelda II: The Adventure of Link in January, and February brought us Kirby's Adventure and Super Mario Bros. 2. There have also been plenty of "Special Edition" versions of the existing games, which have you start at later points in the game or give you all the password-locked bonuses from the get-go. We haven't gotten word of the March additions to the NES library, but we're sure that we'll hear more about that soon.

November 7, 2018: New titles coming to the NES library!

Nintendo has given NES fans with Nintendo Switch Online something to look forward to. On November 14, there will be three new titles joining the NES library. Those who love the Metroidvania genre will be happy to get their mitts on the original with the release of Metroid. If you want some super fun retro platforming, you can look forward to Mighty Bomb Jack, and those who find joy in sidescrolling shooters will be happy to see the addition of TwinBee. I am thrilled to see that Nintendo is going to continue to build this library of retro classics.

With a deep and fantastic library like Nintendo's, it is a joy to find that they are no longer content to let great titles languish as they have for so many years. So many young people have never gotten an opportunity to play some of the games that made Nintendo the behemoth that it is.

Hopefully, we will see this library of awesome old games expand, so gamers will not have to turn to eBay or emulators to play the titles they want to revisit.

How to take on Lugia in Pokémon Go

Do you have what it takes to beat Lugia?

Lugia is returning to Legendary Raids in Pokémon Go. Beginning September 1, 2021, Trainers will have two weeks to battle and capture it. Fortunately, we here at iMore have everything you need to know to win this fight and add Lugia to your roster. And be sure to check out our Best Pokémon Go accessories, so you can be fully equipped for your Pokémon Journey!

Who is Lugia in Pokémon Go?

The Mascot of Pokémon Silver and Ho-Oh's polar opposite, Lugia is the Master of the Seas, as well as the Legendary Bird Trio. It is a Psychic and Flying type Legendary Pokémon that is so incredibly powerful, it usually isolates itself to the bottom of the oceans to keep from accidentally inflicting harm. It is incredibly intelligent and can communicate with Pokémon and humans alike through telepathy.

When it comes to Pokémon Go, Lugia is the bulkiest Psychic type out there, and with the addition of its Signature Move, Aeroblast, it's a fantastic Flying type as well. Because Lugia will have Aeroblast in this run, it's definitely a Pokémon you want in your roster!

What are the best counters for Lugia in Pokémon Go?

Lugia is capable of dealing Psychic, Flying, Dragon, and Water damage. It takes super effective damage from Rock, Ghost, Electric, Ice, and Dark attacks. It's greatest strength, however, is its defense. Lugia is bulky and can take a lot of damage, so you're going to want to focus on heavy hitters to beat the clock. Mega Evolution is definitely going to be your friend here, especially if you can coordinate with the rest of your Raid party.

Mega Gengar

Outperforming every other counter for Lugia, Mega Gengar can deal massive damage to Lugia and boost the other Ghost types on the field. As a Poison and Ghost type, Gengar takes increased damage from Lugia's Psychic attacks, but with Lick and Shadow Ball it will take a big chunk of Lugia's HP. If it is possible to safely coordinate with the rest of your Raid party, Mega Gengar is the key to a Ghost based offensive.

Mega Houndoom

Another Mega Pokémon, Mega Houndoom is a Fire and Dark type. It takes double damage from Lugia's Water type attack, but only quarter damage from its Psychic attacks. Plus, it will boost other Dark types on the field. It's a little more accessible than Mega Gengar, having been introduced sooner. Snarl and Foul Play is the moveset you'll want your Mega Houndoom to know.

Mega Manectric

For an Electric based offensive, Mega Manectric is the ideal choice to lead your team. As a pure Electric type, it takes reduced damage from Flying type attacks and it has no weaknesses that Lugia can exploit. If you're bringing Mega Manectric to this fight, you'll want it to know Charge Beam and Wild Charge, and be sure to coordinate with your Raid party to make the most of it's Electric boost.

Zekrom

A Legendary Pokémon first discovered in the Unova region of Gen V, Zekrom was introduced to Pokémon Go in the midst of a global pandemic and so has very limited availability. Some players don't even have one, much less the Candy to power it up. Still, if you can bring this Electric and Dragon type along to fight Lugia, it takes reduced damage from both Water and Flying type attacks, but double damage from Dragon type attacks. You'll want your Zekrom to know Charge Beam and Wild Charge.

Mega Gyarados

Although Mega Houndoom is the better choice for leading a Dark type attack on Lugia, Mega Gyarados can fill this role well if you have more Mega Energy for it. As a Water and Dark type, it resists Psychic and Water type damage and has no relevant weaknesses. Bite and Crunch are the moves you'll want your Mega Gyarados to know and be sure to coordinate with your Raid party if it is safe to do so.

Thundurus (Therian forme)

One of the Legendary Forces of Nature, Therian forme Thundurus performs very well against Lugia. Although the Therian formes haven't been available as often, both Therian and Incarnate formes use the same Candy, so most active players have the resources to power it up. As an Electric and Flying type, Thundurus resists Lugia's Flying type moves and has no weaknesses it can exploit. Volt Switch and Thunderbolt are the moves you'll want your Thundurus to know in this fight.

Darkrai

The Mythical Dark type Pokémon, Darkrai performs very well against Lugia and, unlike most Mythical Pokémon, it has had widespread availability in Pokémon Go being feature in Legendary Raids for Halloween. As a pure Dark type, it has no weaknesses Lugia can exploit and takes quarter damage from Lugia's Psychic type attacks. You'll want Snarl for your Darkrai's Fast Attack, and either Shadow Ball or Dark Pulse for the Charged Attack. Generally, Shadow Ball does more damage, but if there is a Mega Houndoom or Mega Gyarados on the field, you'll want Dark Pulse to take advantage of the attack boost.

Rhyperior

The Sinnoh Stone evolution of Gen I's Rhyhorn, Rhyperior is an easily obtained counter to Lugia. The Ground and Rock type takes half damage from Lugia's Flying type moves, but quad damage from its Water type attack. If you're bringing Rhyperior to this Raid, you'll want it to know Smack Down and the Community Day exclusive move, Rock Wrecker. Stone Edge can also work, but not nearly as well.

Origin Forme Giratina

Originally encountered in the Sinnoh Region of Gen IV, Origin forme Giratina is another great counter for Lugia thanks to its movepool including Shadow Ball. This Ghost and Dragon type Legendary has been in Raids a couple times now and it shares Candy with Altered forme Giratina, so most players have at least one powered up. It takes half damage from Lugia's Water type attack, but double damage from it's Dragon type attack. If you are bringing Giratina to this fight, you'll want it to know Shadow Claw and Shadow Ball.

Mega Ampharos

Mega Manectric is the better choice, but Mega Ampharos is still a solid lead for an Electric based offensive. As an Electric and Dragon type, it takes increased damage from Lugia's Dragon type move, but resists both Flying and Water. You'll want your Mega Ampharos to know Volt Switch and Zap Cannon and be sure to coordinate with your Raid party if it safe to do so.

Weavile

The Sinnoh Stone evolution of Sneasal, Weavile performs well in this Raid and is very common, so most players have at least one or two. As a Dark and Ice type, it has no relevant weaknesses and takes reduced damage from Lugia's Psychic type attacks. If you are bringing Weavile along, you'll want Snarl for it's Fast Attack and Avalanche for it's Charged Attack.

Galarian Darmanitan

The Galarian regional variant of Darmanitan works very well in this Raid. Both the Unova version and Galarian version of Darumaka use the same Candy and it only has two stages, leaving lots of Candy left over for powering up. As an Ice type, Galarian Darmanitan has no weaknesses Lugia can exploit. Ice Fang and Avalanche are the moves you'll want your Galarian Darmanitan to know.

Rampardos

A fossil Pokémon from the Sinnoh region, Rampardos is a solid choice to counter Lugia, especially if you cannot coordinate the use of Mega Pokémon. It's been boosted in several events, and it only requires 50 Candy to fully evolve, so most active players have the resouces to power it up. As a pure Rock type, it resists Flying type, but Lugia's Water type move will deal super effective damage. Rampardos comign to fight Lugia should know Smack Down and Rock Slide.

Magnezone

The Sinnoh Stone evolution of the Gen I's Magnemite, Magnezone is a great counter for Lugia. Magnemite Candy is easy enough to obtain, and even though you can only evolve it when using a Magnetic Lure Mod, one Lure Mod is good for as many Magnezone as you want to evolve. As an Electric and Steel type, it takes reduced damage from Dragon and Psychic attacks, and even less damage from Flying, making it last a long time against Lugia. The moveset you'll want is Spark and Wild Charge.

Mega Abomasnow

If you want to focus on Ice types when going up against Lugia, Mega Abomasnow should definitely be on your team. As a Grass and Ice type, it resists Water, but takes increased damage from Flying type attacks. If possible to coordinate with your Raid party, it will boost other Ice types on the field. Powder Snow and Weather Ball are the moves you'll want your Abomasnow to know for this Raid.

Raikou

One of Ho-Oh's Legendary Beasts, Raikou has been available through Raids, Research Breakthrough Rewards, and even as a Shadow Pokémon forced to fight for the infamous Team GO Rocket's Giovanni. You probably have a few in your roster so it's a great option for this Raid. As an Electric type, it has no weaknesses for Lugia to exploit and resists Lugia's Flying type attack. The fast move Volt Switch and the charged move Wild Charge are the moves you'll want for your Raikou.

Backups?

Although most players will be able to make a team of the best counters, if you're finding a gap in your team, there are plenty of back ups who work well in larger groups. Just make sure you're dodging and any of the following could be a decent back up:

  • Chandelure with Hex and Shadow Ball
  • Electivire with Thunder Shock and wild Charge
  • Terrakion with Smack Down and Rock Slide
  • Yveltal with Snarl and Dark Pulse
  • Gengar with Lick and Shadow Ball
  • Zapdos with Thunder Shock and Thunderbolt
  • Mamoswine with Powder Snow and Avanlache
  • Luxray with Spark and Wild Charge
  • Hydreigon with Bite and Dark Pulse
  • Tyranitar with Smack Down and Stone Edge
  • Alolan Golem with Rock Throw and Wild Charge
  • Mewtwo with Psycho Cut and Shadow Ball
  • Zacian (Hero of Many Battles forme) with Snarl and Wild Charge
  • Glaceon with Frost Breath and Avalanche
  • Honchkrow with Snarl and Dark Pulse
  • Thundurus (Incarnate forme) with Thunder Shock and Thunder
  • Deoxys with Charge Beam and Thunderbolt
  • Gigalith with Smack Down and Rock Slide
  • Bisharp with Snarl and Dark Pulse
  • Jynx with Frost Breath and Avalanche

Shadow Pokémon?

The rebalance of Shadow Pokémon rescued from Team GO Rocket make them excellent glass cannons. Not only are their stats boosted, but during special events or with Elite TMs, it's possible to change their moves. If you happen to have any of the following Pokémon with the right moveset, they will work very well in this Raid:

  • Shadow Raikou with Thunder Shock and Wild Charge
  • Shadow Electivire with Thunder Shock and Wild Charge
  • Shadow Weavile with Snarl and Avalanche
  • Shadow Magnezone with Spark and Wild Charge
  • Shadow Zapdos with Thunder Shock and Thunderbolt
  • Shadow Mamoswine with Powder Snow and Avalanche
  • Shadow Tyranitar with Smack Down and Stone Edge
  • Shadow Mewtwo with Psycho Cut and Shadow Ball
  • Shadow Honchkrow with Snarl and Dark Pulse
  • Shadow Absol with Snarl and Dark Pulse
  • Shadow Aerodactyl with Rock Throw and Rock Slide
  • Shadow Magneton with Spark and Discharge
  • Shadow Mismagius with Hex and Shadow Ball
  • Shadow Manectric with Snarl and Wild Charge
  • Shadow Houndoom with Snarl and Foul Play

Note: Shadow Raikou, Shadow Electivire, Shadow Magnezone, Shadow Weavile and Shadow Zapdos outperform everything else except Mega Gengar. Likewise, Shadow Mamoswine, Shadow Tyranitar, and Shadow Mewtwo perform at the same level as the Pokémon in the best counters list.

How many players does it take to beat Lugia in Pokémon Go?

Lugia is a tough Raid because its defense is just so high. Beating the clock is the real challenge here. Even with top level Trainers and the best circumstances, you'll still need three, but for lower level Trainers or those without Mega or Shadow counters, you'll want at least four or five.

Weather Conditions that could impact this Raid include:

  • Windy Weather will boost Lugia's Dragon, Psychic, and Flying type moves.
  • Rainy Weather will boost Lugia's Water type move, as well as your Electric type counters.
  • Fog will boost your Ghost and Dark type counters
  • Snow will boost your Ice type counters
  • Partly Cloudy Weather will boost your Rock type counters.
