Chrome iCloud extension for Windows pulled following issues

The currently available version is a downgrade from the version released Monday.

What you need to know

  • An iCloud password extension update for Google Chrome on Windows appears to have been pulled following problems with its launch.

An iCloud update for Windows that brought iCloud Passwords support to Google Chrome appears to have been pulled following some launch-day issues.

From The 8-Bit:

Apple seems to have pulled the iCloud update numbered version 12 that brings support for the iCloud Passwords Chrome extension.

Currently, the latest downloadable version of iCloud on the Microsoft App Store is 11.6.32.0, which is a downgrade from the version 12 that was available yesterday. This is despite the fact that the description for the iCloud app on the Microsoft Store still mentions support for the iCloud Passwords extension.

It's unclear why Apple pulled off the update. But the host of user-reported issues with the extension could be a reason.

On the Chrome Extensions page, users are reporting that the '12' update for iCloud on Windows is no longer available. The 8-Bit reports 2FA code glitches and other users reportedly saw 2FA not working altogether, as well as the plugin simply not working.

You can still download iCloud Passwords as a Chrome extension, however when you try to use it, clicking downloads just takes you to an Apple support page. The version of iCloud listed on the Microsoft Store seems to be version 11.6.32.0, a downgrade from yesterday's version 12.

As the report notes, its likely Apple has pulled the update to fix some of the launch-day quirks users were reporting yesterday. Apple officially launched the feature on Sunday. From the listing:

iCloud Passwords allows you to use the same strong Safari passwords you create on your Apple device, with Chrome on Windows.

iCloud Passwords is a Chrome extension for Windows users that allows you to use the same strong Safari passwords you create on your iPhone, iPad, or Mac when visiting websites in Chrome on your Windows PC. iCloud Passwords also saves any new passwords you create in Chrome to your iCloud Keychain so that it is also available on your Apple devices.
