What you need to know
- Apple has stopped signing iOS 14.7, preventing people from installing it.
- The only version of iOS that's now available to be installed is iOS 14.7.1.
At least until Apple releases something new.
Apple has stopped signing iOS 14.7 which means people can no longer install it on iPhones. That means that the only version of iOS that can be installed as of right now is the iOS 14.7.1 update that was released last week.
Apple routinely stops signing older versions of its iOS software to ensure that people are running the latest version wherever possible. The newer software often comes with support for new features and includes important bug and security fixes and Apple wants to make sure people have those fixes installed.
Right now anyone restoring an iPhone will have iOS 14.7.1 installed. Those who are on the developer and public beta train can also install the iOS 15 betas if they're feeling brave, but that update won't be released to the world until some time this fall.
While the cessation of iOS 14.7 signing won't be an issue for most, some people like to downgrade when they encounter bugs that were not present in a previous release. If that's you, you're out of luck for now. The best move is to hope that whatever you're dealing with is fixed in the next iOS update rather than trying to downgrade.
Apple has a busy few months ahead of it and not just because iOS 15 is on the horizon. Apple is set to announce the iPhone 13 lineup at some point in September — a release that's likely to bring us the best iPhone yet. New AirPods, iPads, and Macs are also in the pipeline while Apple Watch Series 7 is just around the corner, too.
