IMDb TV's free streaming service gets its own mobile apps

What you need to know

  • IMDb TV has new mobile apps for streaming free TV shows and movies.
  • The Amazon-owned service offers ad-supported content for free.

No more diving into the IMDb app to find stuff to watch.

Amazon-owned IMDb TV now has dedicated streaming apps, bringing TV shows and movies to viewers for free and with fewer ads than traditional services.

Previously known as IMDb Freeride, the service already has apps for Chromecast, Google TV, PlayStation, and Smart TVs but those wanting to watch on mobile devices had to dig into the IMDb app to find the content they want to watch. As reported by Variety, that's no longer the case.

Amazon-owned IMDb originally launched the free service as Freedive in January 2019, before redubbing it IMDb TV. The streaming service features a continually updating library of movies and TV shows, including popular titles like "Chicago Fire," "All in the Family," "Mad Men," "Malcolm in the Middle," "The Wolf of Wall Street" and "How to Train Your Dragon." According to the company IMDb TV has half the ads of traditional linear TV.

While unlikely to compete with pay-for options like Netflix and Apple TV+, this free offering surely has a place on the Home screens of many who want to be able to watch great content without having to pay for it.

While IMDb TV is currently only available to people in the United States, it's thought the company is looking to expand beyond those borders. The UK is one country reportedly being targeted, although there has been no official announcement.
