Apple's plans to bring reverse wireless charging might not come to fruition any time soon. That's according to a new report by Bloomberg.
According to the well-connected Mark Gurman, Apple has been looking at bringing such a feature to iPhones but it isn't looking likely to ship it anytime soon. Bad news for AirPods fans.
Apple has also internally discussed a goal of letting many of its mobile devices like Apple Watches, AirPods, and iPhones charge each other, but that functionality is unlikely in the near future. For the 2019 iPhones, Apple planned, but canceled, a feature that would let users charge AirPods on the back of the phone.
Some had hoped that reverse wireless charging, combined with MagSafe, would allow us to wirelessly charge AirPods on the back of future iPhones. And while that might not happen soon, Apple is at least looking at expanding its use of MagSafe.
Apple's MagSafe technology is expected to make its way to several more products over the next year. The company plans to add it to redesigned MacBook Pros and MacBook Airs coming this year, Bloomberg News has reported. On the Mac, the feature means any accidental yanking of the power cable would simply detach it from the laptop rather than pull down the entire computer.
As is always the case with these kinds of reports, Apple's plans can and do change. We only have to look a the many false starts AirTags have experienced to know that Apple's bigwigs are not immune from a change of heart. Hopefully they come to their senses in terms of reverse wireless charging.
