It's time for new iPhones!
Apple has just announced the next iteration of iPhone with the iPhone 13 series. This includes the iPhone 13 mini, iPhone 13, iPhone 13 Pro, and iPhone 13 Pro Max. Here's everything you need to know about the next generation of iPhone.
Design
While the iPhone 12 lineup brought about a major change to the rounded edges of previous generations, the iPhone 13 has no change from this design. That's right — we're keeping those flat edges.
The iPhone 13 mini and iPhone 13 will come in five new colors: pink, blue, midnight, starlight, and PRODUCT(RED), . The iPhone 13 Pro and iPhone 13 Pro Max will come in graphite, silver, gold, and a new sierra blue color way.
However, there have been some tweaks to the cameras on the iPhone 13. While the regular iPhone 13 and iPhone 13 mini have a simply rearranged camera configuration with diagonally placed cameras, the Pro devices have a larger camera bump but the same camera configuration as the previous iteration. We are also getting a 20% smaller notch than previous generations, and the antennae band is made from recycled materials.
Size
The iPhone 13 lineup is essentially coming in the same sizes as the previous generation of iPhone 12. That means these are the screen sizes for each:
- iPhone 13 mini (5.4-inch)
- iPhone 13 (6.1-inch)
- iPhone 13 Pro (6.1-inch)
- iPhone 13 Pro Max (6.7-inch)
Display
The iPhone 13 mini and iPhone 13 get a Super Retina XDR display that is more advanced and will be 28% brighter with 1200 nits of peak brightness.
The iPhone 13 Pro and Pro Max have a new and improved Super Retina XDR Display with ProMotion. This means you get 1000 nits of peak outdoor brightness, and a refresh rate from 10Hz to 120Hz. This custom OLED panel display also responds dynamically, allowing you to save battery life in appropriate situations.
Processor
The iPhone 13 lineup will use A15 Bionic with a 6-Core CPU that has two high performance cores and four efficiency cores. It will be 50% faster than the compettiion and have 4-Core GPU for 30% faster graphics. A 16-core Neural Engine helps with Machine Learning. With the Neural Engine, you can do 15.8 trillion operations per second.
Camera
The iPhone 13 and iPhone 13 mini have several advancements in hardware and computation photography. These models will have a new Wide camera with 1.7 µm pixels, have a larger sensor for a dual camera system, and can gather 47% more light, resulting in less noise and brighter images. It is also getting Sensor-shift OIS, which was originally introduced in the iPhone 12 Pro Max, which will also be available in the Wide camera. The Ultra Wide camera will capture images with more detail in the low light situations.
As far as the iPhone 13 Pro and Pro Max, there are new sensors and lenses for all three cameras, and the same camera system is available on both sizes, so you don't need to pick the larger Pro Max to get the best camera features. The new camera and lenses are optimized for iOS 15 and powered by the new image signal processor (SIP) in the A15 Bionic chip. This means improved noise reduction and mapping. The Wide camera has a larger sensor with 1.9 µm pixels that will giv you less noise and faster shutter speeds in low light situations. A larger ƒ/1.5 aperture in the Wide lens means huge improvements in low light photography, about 2.2x better than the previous iteration. Both the iPhone 13 Pro and iPhone 13 Pro Max will have Sensor-shift optical image stabilization (OIS).
The Ultra Wide camera has a wider ƒ/1.8 aperture and a new autofocus system. This allows you to get 92% improvement in low light for images that are brighter and sharper than ever before. This new lens design also means you can use the autofocus capability with the Ultra Wide lens and software to unlock macro photography with a minimum focus distance of two centimeters. The Macro ability also extends out to Slo-mo and Time Lapse video.
The Telephoto lens is now 77mm, which lets you get closer to subjects with a 3x optical zoom capability. When combined wtih the Ultra Wide lens, you get a total of 6x optical zoom.
Battery
The iPhone 13 mini will last 1.5 hours longer than it's predecessor. The iPhone 13 will last 2.5 hours longer than the iPhone 12. iPhone 13 Pro will last 1.5 hours longer than the iPhone 12 Pro, and the iPhone 13 Pro Max will last 2.5 hours longer than the iPhone 12 Pro Max.
Connectivity
Apple will be expanding support for 5G connectivity by adding more bands for 5G, and it will be easier to connect in more places with faster speeds. Of course, this depends on the carriers.
Storage
iPhone 13 and iPhone 13 mini will start at 128GB, and be available in 256GB and a new 512GB option. The iPhone 13 Pro and Pro Max will start at 128GB, but also have 256GB, 512GB, and for the very first time, 1TB of storage.
Price
The iPhone 13 mini starts at $699, while the iPhone 13 starts at $799. iPhone 13 Pro starts at $999, with iPhone 13 Pro Max starting at $1099.
Release date
Apple's iPhone 13 event is taking place on September 14, so we can expect the phone to be released later that week for pre-order, arriving in stores the following week.
