Masimo sues Apple to ban the Apple Watch Series 6 from the United States

What you need to know

  • Masimo has filed a patent-fringement complaint against Apple.
  • The company is attempting to block the import of the Apple Watch Series 6 into the U.S.

Could the Apple Watch be banned from the United States?

A company is attempting to prevent Apple from selling the Apple Watch Series 6 in the United States.

As reported by Bloomberg, Masimo Corp. has filed a patent-infringement compliant at the United States International Trade Commission that is attempting to stop Apple from being able to import its smartwatch.

Apple's Series 6 smartwatch infringes five patents for devices that use light transmitted through the body to measure oxygen levels in blood, Masimo said in a complaint filed at the Washington agency. The patented technology is key to Masimo's core business and Apple is unfairly copying the features, the company said.

Bloomberg Intelligence analyst Tamlin Bason believes that the lawsuit could end with a settlement benefiting Masimo in the form of yearly payments from Apple.

The dispute is likely to end in a settlement that could net Masimo between $50 million and $300 million a year in royalties, Bloomberg Intelligence analyst Tamlin Bason said in a note Tuesday. Masimo reported $1.14 billion in sales last year.

Apple denies that it stole any trade secrets or infringed the patents in the earlier case. Company officials didn't immediately respond to queries seeking comment on the new case. The unit that includes sales of Apple Watch reported $30.6 billion in revenue in fiscal 2020.

Masimo's argument for keeping the Apple Watch Series 6 from customers in the United States is based on the fact that the blood oxygen sensor built into the watch is not yet to be used for medical purposes.

"Apple heavily markets that feature of the Series 6 to give the watch the appearance of a medical device," Masimo said in the filing. "Yet, hidden from the millions of purchasers of the Series 6, Apple warns in the fine print that the blood oxygen measurements should not be relied upon for medical purposes."

While the threat exists from the lawsuit, it is highly unlikely that the Apple Watch Series 6 will just disspear from store shelves in the United States. If you're paranoid and want to get one quickly, though, check out our list of the Best Apple Watch Series 6 deals.

The 12-inch MacBook is now a vintage Apple product

What you need to know

  • The 12-inch MacBook is now a vintage Apple product.
  • The laptop was the peak of minimalism for Apple in a laptop.

The 12-inch MacBook paved the way for some and features while introducing unfortunate others.

Earlier today, Apple quietly added the 12-inch MacBook, which was originally released in 2015, to its list of vintage products. As a vintage product, owners of the older MacBook are still eligible to have the laptop serviced at both Apple and the company's wide range of third-party repair shops.

Owners of iPhone, iPad, iPod, Mac, or Apple TV products may obtain service and parts from Apple service providers, including Apple Retail Stores and Independent Repair Providers, for a minimum of 5 years from when Apple last distributed the product for sale.

Service and parts may be obtained for longer, as required by law or for up to 7 years, subject to parts availability. Additionally, Mac notebooks may be eligible for an extended battery-only repair period for up to 10 years from when the product was last distributed for sale, subject to parts availability.

The 12-inch MacBook was a true feat of engineering when it was released and technically still is. The laptop shrunk down the old design of the MacBook Air into a sleeker, smaller design that still packed a Retina Display. The MacBook was also the first Mac to feature only USB-C ports on the sides, ditching the long-present USB-A, HDMI, and SD Card ports. It also sported the infamous Butterfly Keyboard, which plagued many Mac users until Apple finally switched back to the Magic Keyboard with its newer MacBook Air and MacBook Pro.

The port situation has actually remained the same across the MacBook Air and MacBook Pro, but that is expected to change with the upcoming MacBook Pro. According to rumors, Apple is expected to bring back the HDMI and SD Card ports to its redesigned MacBook Pro models which are rumored to be announced this fall.

If you need a Macbook now check out our list of the Best Mac 2021.

How to take on Zekrom the Deep Black Pokémon

Do you have what it takes to beat Zekrom?

For Pokémon Go Fest 2021, Niantic is bringing back every Legendary Raid for one day only. On Sunday, July 18, Zekrom will return to Raids, alongside dozens of other Legenday Pokémon. Fortunately, we here at iMore have everything you need to know to win this fight and add Zekrom to your roster. And be sure to check out our Best Pokémon Go Accessories, so you can be fully equipped for your Pokémon Journey!

Who is Zekrom in Pokémon Go?

One of the Tao Trio of the Unova region, Zekrom is a Dragon and Electric type Legendary Pokémon. The Tao Trio is based on the concepts of Yin, Yang, and Wuji. Zekrom represents Yin with its Electric typing, while Reshiram represents Yang with its Fire typing, and Kyurem, with its Ice typing, represents Wuji, which is the absence of Yin and Yang. Zekrom is also the mascot for Pokémon White.

Zekrom has a massive CP cap — we're talking over 53k in Raids! It's one of the best Electric type attackers in the game, thanks to its stats and its secondary typing. As a Dragon type goes, it's not quite as amazing, but it's still pretty solid. Regardless, it's only been in Raids once before and that was at the height of a global pandemic so many players don't even have one yet.

What are the best counters for Zekrom in Pokémon Go?

As a Dragon and Electric type Pokémon, Zekrom is weak to Ground, Ice, Dragon, and Fairy. It's capable of dealing Dragon, Electric, Steel, and Dark type damage.

Palkia

The Legendary mascot of Pokémon Pearl, Palkia is the best non-Shadow counter for Zekrom. As a Water and Dragon type, it resists Zekrom's Steel type attack, but like most of the counters, it takes super effective damage from Dragon type moves. It hasn't seen widespread availability with a single run in Legendary Raids and Pokémon Go Fest 2020, so you might not have one fully powered up. If you do bring Palkia to this Raid, Dragon Tail and Draco Meteor are the moves you're looking for.

Garchomp

Originally encountered in the Sinnoh region of Gen IV, Garchomp is an excellent choice for this Raid. As a Ground and Dragon type, Garchomp takes super effective damage from Zekrom's Dragon type attacks, but resists its Electric type attacks. Thanks to its recent Community Day, most active players have a few already powered up. Dragon Tail and Outrage are the moves you'll want your Garchomp to know for this fight.

Zekrom

As is often the case with Dragon types, Zekrom makes a great counter for itself, especially if the Zekrom you're facing doesn't have Dragon type moves. Unfortunately, Zekrom has only had a single run in Raids and that was at the height of a global pandemic, so many players don't even have one, much less the Candy to power it up. If you do have one, you'll want it to know Dragon Breath and Outrage.

Reshiram

The Legendary mascot of Pokémon Black, Reshiram performs very well in this Raid. As a Dragon and Fire type, it takes increased damage from Dragon type moves, while resisting both Steel and Electric. Much like its counterpart, however, Reshiram only had one run in Raids and it was during the pandemic so many players don't even have one, much less the Candy to power it up. However, if you have one, the moveset you'll want to go against Zekrom is Dragon Breath and Draco Meteor.

Dialga

The Legendary mascrot of Pokémon Diamond, Dialga is a great tanky option for this Raid. A Dragon and Steel type, it resists Electric and Steel type moves, and it's the only Dragon type in Pokémon Go that isn't weak against Dragon type moves. Unfortunately, Dialga has only had one run in Raids and Pokémon Go Fest 2020, so many players don't have it or the Candy to power it up. Still, if you are bringing Dialga to fight Zekrom, Dragon Breath and Draco Meteor is the moveset you're looking for.

Rayquaza

The mascot of Gen III's Pokémon Emerald Rayquaza is still a great counter for Zekrom, even if it's no longer the best. As a Dragon and Flying type, It doesn't bring any resistances to the battle, but the only weakness Zekrom can exploit is Dragon type damage. Rayquaza has also had several runs in Raids and been featured in Special Research, so most players have had plenty of opportunities to add it to their roster. Dragon Tail is the fast move you'll want your Rayquaza to know and Outrage is the best charged attack.

Mega Charizard X

Although it doesn't perform as well as some of the other top counters, if it's at all possible, you will want Mega Charizard X on your team for this Raid. It will provide a significant boost to the other Dragon types on the field, so if it's possible to safely coordinate with other trainers, do so! As a Dragon and Fire type, it resists Electric and Steel type attacks, while sharing the Dragon type weakness. You'll want your Mega Charizard to know Dragon Breath and Dragon Claw when facing Zekrom.

Dragonite

The original pseudo-Legendary from Gen I, Dragonite is a solid counter with great availability. It has had the Community Day treatment, has been featured in events and Special Research, and is even available as a Shadow Pokémon. As a Dragon and Flying type, it's not bringing any useful resistances to this fight and it's weak to Dragon type moves, but it's still a great counter that most every player has. Dragon Tail and Dragon Claw are the ideal moveset for Dragonite in this battle, but Outrage is extremely close. Draco Meteor can also work if you don't have the TMs to spare.

Mamoswine

A Sinnoh Stone Evolution, Mamoswine performs well against Zekrom. As a Ground and Ice type is super resistant to Electric type moves, but weak against Steel. It's also been featured in a Community Day, as well as several other events, so most players already have a couple. Capable of getting STAB on two of Zekrom's weaknesses, Mud Slap and Avalanche are the ideal moveset, but Powder Snow and Bulldoze also work well.

Salamence

A pseudo-Legendary from the Hoenn region, Salamence is the last of our top counters. Having been the star of its own Community Day, as well as appearing in Raids and other events, most players have at least one really strong Salamence powered up. It's a Dragon and Flying type, so its only relevant weakness is Dragon. Dragon Tail and Draco Meteor are the moves you're looking for but Outrage can also work well.

Back ups?

Although most players will be able to make a team of the best counters, if you're finding a gap in your team, there are plenty of back ups who work well in larger groups. Just make sure you're dodging and any of the following could be a decent back up:

Shadow Pokémon

The rebalance of Shadow Pokémon rescued from Team GO Rocket make them excellent glass cannons. Not only are their stats boosted, but during special events, it's possible to change their moves with TMs. If you happen to have any of the following Pokémon with the right moveset, they will work very well in this Raid:

  • Shadow Mamoswine with Mud-Slap and Avalanche
  • Shadow Dragonite with Dragon Tail and Dragon Claw
  • Shadow Salamence with Dragon Tail and Outrage
  • Shadow Gardevoir Charm and Dazzling Gleam
  • Shadow Mewtwo* with Psycho Cut and Ice Beam
  • Shadow Weaville with Ice Shard and Avalanche
  • Shadow Granbull with Charm and Play Rough
  • Shadow Flygon with Dragon Tail and Dragon Claw
  • Shadow Swampert with Mud Shot and Earthquake
  • Shadow Porygon Z with Hidden Power and Blizzard

Note: Shadow Mamoswine and Shadow Dragonite outperform every other Pokémon in the best counters list. Shadow Salamence, Shadow Gardevoir, and Shadow Mewtwo also perform on par with the other best counters.

If you have a Shadow Mewtwo with Psystrike or Shadow Ball, do not TM these moves! Both are Legacy Moves that make Shadow Mewtwo the best Psychic and Ghost type attacker in the entire game.

How many players does it take to beat Zekrom in Pokémon Go?

With perfect conditions, it is possible for two players to take on Zekrom alone. However, that is a lot of pieces that have to fall into place. If you're playing with high level players, four should be able to handle this Raid. For lower level players, you'll want to aim for at least six. The addition of Raid Invitations should make a considerable difference.

Weather conditions that can impact this Raid include:

  • Rain boosts Zekrom's Electric type moves
  • Wind will boost its Dragon type moves, as well as your Dragon type counters
  • Snow will boost its Steel type move, as well as your Ice type counters
  • Fog will boost Zekrom's Dark type move
  • Sunny/Clear Weather will boost your Ground type counters
  • Cloudy weather will boost your Fairy types counters

How to take on Mega Houndoom in Pokémon Go

Mega Evolution has finally arrived in Pokémon Go and with it, Mega Raids! A whole new class of Raids, Mega Raids let you and your friends challenge a Mega Evolved Pokémon. Mega Houndoom is coming back to Mega Raids on July 1, 2021 and we here at iMore have everything you need to know to win this fight! Also, be sure to check out our best Pokémon Go accessories, so you can be fully equipped on your Pokémon Journey!

Who is Mega Houndoom in Pokémon Go?

A Dark and Fire type originally discovered in the Johto region of Gen II, Houndoom is a fiendish canine capable of inflicting severe burns with its toxic, fiery breath. When Mega Evolved, Mega Houndoom's body produces so much heat that its claws and the tip of its tail literally melt, causing Mega Houndoom constant pain. It remains a Dark and Fire type when Mega Evolved, but also gets a huge stat boost. Although this devilish dog's bite is far worse than its bark, Mega Evolution and Shadow Pokémon provide an easy road to victory.

What are the best counters for Mega Houndoom in Pokémon Go?

Mega Houndoom is capable of dealing Fire and Dark type damage, and has four weaknesses: Fighting, Ground, Rock, and most important, Water. Because Mega Evolved Pokémon boost the damage done by similar type attacks, players wanting to take down Mega Houndoom fast should coordinate Water type counters and Mega Blastoise for this Mega Raid.

Mega Blastoise

The top counter by far, Mega Blastoise is the key to taking out Mega Houndoom with just a handful of players. As a Water type, Mega Blastoise takes half damage from Mega Houndoom's Fire type attacks and has no relevant weaknesses. If it's safe to coordinate with your fellow Raiders, Mega Blastoise will boost other Water types on the field. Water Gun and Hydro Cannon are the ideal moveset for your Mega Blastoise.

Mega Gyarados

Although Mega Blastoise is the preferred Mega for this Raid, Mega Gyarados comes in as a close second, so if you have more Mega Energy for Gyarados or already have one Mega Evolved, definitely bring it along to fight Mega Houndoom. As a Water and Dark type, Mega Gyarados takes half damage from all of Mega Houndoom's potential attacks. For this Mega Raid, you'll want Waterfall and Hydro Pump.

Conkeldurr

Conkeldurr, a Fighting type introduced in Gen V's Unova region, makes a great counter for Mega Houndoom. Its first stage, Timburr has been featured in Raids and events and it benefits from Trade Evolution leaving a lot more Candies for powering up. It resists Mega Houndoom's Dark type attacks and has no weaknesses that can be exploited in this fight. Counter and Dynamic Punch are the ideal moves for Conkeldurr.

Rhyperior

If you aren't able to coordinate a pure Water type offensive, Rhyperior performs very well in this Mega Raid. Rhyperior is the final evolution of Gen I's Rhyhorn which has been featured in events and a Community Day, so most players have a few already powered up. As a Ground and Rock type, Rhyperior takes half damage from Mega Houndoom's Fire type attacks. If you're bringing Rhyperior to this fight, you'll want it to know Mud-Slap and Rock Wrecker; however, if you don't have the Community Day exclusive move or the Elite TM to spare, Stone Edge works.

Kyogre

The Water type mascot of Pokémon Sapphire, Kyogre is an excellent counter for Mega Houndoom. Although Kyogre is a Legendary Pokémon, it has been available numerous times and so many players already have one or two powered up. Kyogre takes half damage from Mega Houndoom's Fire type attacks and with Waterfall and Surf will make quick work of the hell hound.

Rampardos

A fossil type Pokémon first discovered in the Sinnoh region, Rampardos is a relatively easy Pokémon to evolve and power up thanks to events and eggs featuring its first stage, Cranidos. As a Rock type, Rampardos takes half damage from Mega Houndoom's Fire type attacks and with Smack Down and Rock Slide, it can deal super effective damage.

Terrakion

One of the Legendary Swords of Justice, Terrakion is a Rock and Fighting type who takes half damage from all of Mega Houndoom's attacks. It has been available multiple times in multiple ways, so many players have one or two already powered up. If you're bringing Terrakion to this Mega Raid, you'll want Smack Down for its fast move and Rock Slide for its charged move.

Swampert

The final evolution of the Water starter from Gen III, Swampert is a Water and Ground type that performs very well in this Mega Raid. Having been featured in a Community Day and as a Shadow Pokémon, most players have at least one or two already powered up. It takes half damage from Fire type attacks and normal damage from Dark types. Water Gun and Hydro Cannon are the ideal moveset for this fight.

Machamp

A Fighting type from Gen I's Kanto region, Machamp has been in Pokémon Go since day one, featured in a number of events, and even in Raids. Although there are more powerful Fighting types, none are quite as accessible as Machamp. As if it weren't already easy enough to catch and evolve, the addition of Trade Evolution leaves even more Candies for powering up your Machamp. It takes half damage from Mega Houndoom's Dark type attacks and has no weaknesses relevant to this Mega Raid. Counter and Dynamic Punch are the ideal moveset for your Machamp.

Garchomp

Thanks to its new Community Day exclusive move, Gen IV's Garchomp is now in the top counters for this Mega Raid. As a Ground and Dragon type, Garchomp resists Fire type attacks and has no weaknesses Mega Houndoom can exploit. It was also featured in a recent Community Day, so most active players should have a few. Mud Shot and Earth Power are the ideal moves for this Raid. Earthquake can work if you don't have the Community Day exclusive move or the Elite TM to spare, but that puts its damage behind some of the back ups.

Back ups?

Although most players will be able to make a team of the best counters, if you're finding a gap in your team, there are plenty of back ups who work well in larger groups. Just make sure you're dodging and any of the following could be a decent back up:

  • Feraligatr with Water Gun and Hydro Cannon
  • Lucario with Counter and Aura Sphere
  • Kingler with Bubble and Crabhammer
  • Mega Lopunny with Low Kick and Focus Blast
  • Hariyama with Counter and Dynamic Punch
  • Tyranitar with Smack Down and Stone Edge
  • Empoleon with Waterfall and Hydro Cannon
  • Blaziken with Counter and Focus Blast
  • Haxorus with Counter and Surf
  • Clawitzer with Water Gun and Crabhammer
  • Landorus (Incarnate forme) with Mud Shot and Earth Power
  • Crawdaunt with Waterfall and Crabhammer
  • Gyarados with Waterfall and Hydro Pump
  • Groudon with Mud Shot and Earthquake
  • Landorus (Therian forme) with Mud Shot and Earthquake
  • Palkia with Dragon Tail and Hydro Pump
  • Breloom with Counter and Dynamic Punch
  • Gigalith with Smack Down and Rock Slide
  • Aerodactyl with Rock Throw and Rock Slide
  • Greninja with Bubble and Surf

Shadow Pokémon?

The rebalance of Shadow Pokémon rescued from Team GO Rocket make them excellent glass cannons. Not only are their stats boosted, but during special events or with Elite TMs, it's possible to change their moves. If you happen to have any of the following Pokémon with the right moveset, they will work very well in this Raid:

  • Shadow Swampert with Water Gun and Hydro Cannon
  • Shadow Tyranitar with Smack Down and Stone Edge
  • Shadow Machamp with Counter and Dynamic Punch
  • Shadow Gyarados with Waterfall and Hydro Pump
  • Shadow Hariyama with Counter and Dynamic Punch
  • Shadow Blastoise with Water Gun and Hydro Cannon
  • Shadow Aerodactyl with Rock Throw and Rock Slide
  • Shadow Poliwrath with Bubble and Dynamic Punch
  • Shadow Omastar with Rock Throw and Hydro Pump
  • Shadow Salamence with Dragon Tail and Hydro Pump
  • Shadow Politoed with Bubble and Weather Ball

Note: Shadow Swampert, Shadow Tyranitar, and Shadow Machamp outperform all of the best non-Mega counters. Likewise, Shadow Gyarados and Shadow Blastoise perform at the same level as the Pokémon in the best counters list. If you are able to coordinate the use of Mega Blastoise or Mega Gyarados, they will boost the Water type attacks of other Water types on the field making them all perform even better.

How many players does it take to beat Mega Houndoom in Pokémon Go?

Although it is technically possible for two Trainers with top counters to take on Mega Houndoom, you may need four or five if you're lower level, missing the top counters, or have the weather working against you. If it is possible to safely coordinate with fellow Raiders, you'll want to bring as many as possible so you can maximize the amount of Mega Energy earned.

Weather Conditions that could play into this battle include:

  • Sunny/Clear Weather boosts Mega Houndoom's Fire type attacks and your Ground type counters.
  • Fog boosts Mega Houndoom's Dark type attacks.
  • Rain boosts your Water type counters.
  • Partly Cloudy Weather boost your Rock type counters.
  • Cloudy Weather boosts your Fighting type counters.

How to take on Mewtwo in Pokémon Go

Do you have what it takes to beat Mewtwo?

For Pokémon Go Fest 2021, Niantic is bringing back every Legendary Raid for one day only. On Sunday, July 18, Mewtwo will return to Raids, alongside dozens of other Legenday Pokémon, and Mewtwo will also be the Legendary Raid boss in the days leading up to and following Pokémon Go Fest. Fortunately, we here at iMore have everything you need to know to win this fight and add Mewtwo to your roster. And be sure to check out our Best Pokémon Go Accessories, so you can be fully equipped for your Pokémon Journey!

Who is Mewtwo in Pokémon Go?

One of the strongest and most recognizable Legendary Pokémon, Mewtwo is one of a select few artificial Pokémon, created intentionally by humans. The scientists who created Mewtwo spent many years conducting horrific experiments, splicing and cloning DNA from Mew, the common ancestor of virtually all other Pokémon. Because Mew has the DNA of virtually all other Pokémon, it can learn every move in the core game. Mewtwo came very close, but due to the horrific experiments conducted on it, Mewtwo is believed to be the most savage of Pokémon, harboring deep seated hatred of humanity. Mewtwo is also one of only two Pokémon with multiple Mega Evolutions. Neither Mega Mewtwo X or Mega Mewtwo Y have been intoduced to Pokémon Go... yet.

In Pokémon Go, neither Mewtwo nor Mew can learn every move, but they can learn a very wide range of moves. Mewtwo's diverse movepool and excellent stats make it one of the most powerful Pokémon in all of Pokémon Go. It's Shadow forme is the strongest Pokémon in the game by far. Whether you're looking to add another Mewtwo to your roster or to power up your existing Mewtwo, this is a Raid you won't want to miss out on!

What are the best counters?

As a pure Psychic type, Mewtwo takes double damage from Bug, Ghost, and Dark types. What makes Mewtwo most threatening though (aside from killer stats) is its wide range of moves. In this Raid, Mewtwo has the potential to deal Psychic, Fighting, Electric, Fire, and Ice type damage.

Mega Gengar

Even outperforming Shadow Mewtwo, Mega Gengar should be your first choice for this Raid. A Ghost and Poison type, Mega Gengar is going to take double damage from Mewtwo's fast attack, as well as any Psychic charged attack. If Mewtwo had Focus Blast, Mega Gengar takes reduced damage from Fighting. Even taking double damage from Psychic moves, Mega Gengar still outperforms every other Pokémon in this Raid, so if it's possible to bring one, you absolutely should. Shadow Claw and Shadow Ball are the moves you'll want your Gengar to know.

Mega Houndoom

If you're lacking in Mega Gengar Energy or already have a Mega Houndoom ready, Mega Houndoom performs incredibly well in this Raid. The Mega Evolution of Gen II's Houndoom, this Fire and Dark type resists Psychic, Fire, and Ice, while taking double damage from Fighting. Even with all that resistance on its side, it's still not quite as durable as Mega Gengar, but if you can coordinate with your fellow Raiders, Mega Houndoom makes a great lead for a Dark based counter team. If you're bringing Houndoom to this fight, you'll want it to know Snarl and Foul Play.

Mega Gyarados

Another Mega Pokémon to add to the list, Mega Gyarados doesn't perform quite as well as Mega Houndoom in this Raid, but if you've got the Mega Energy to spare, it will still serve you well. As a Dark and Water type, Mega Gyarados resists Psychic, Fire, and Ice type damage, but takes increased damage from Electric and Fighting. It will also boost the other Dark types on the field so coordinate with your fellow Raid party if it is safe to do so. Bite and Crunch are the moves you'll want your Mega Gyarados to know for this fight.

Origin Forme Giratina

The Legendary mascot of Pokémon Platinum, Giratina performs well against Mewtwo, but specifically in its Origin forme. Because Giratina is a Ghost and Dragon type, Ice Beam is the only move Mewtwo could potentially have that would deal super effective damage, and Giratina takes reduced damage from Fighting, Fire, and Electric. If you're bringing Giratina to this Raid, you'll want Shadow Claw for its fast move and Shadow Ball, which Altered forme Giratina doesn't have access to, for its charged move. Unfortunately, Origin forme Giratina hasn't been available as often as the Altered forme, but if you have it, it will make a great addition to your team.

Chandelure

Originally encounted in the Unova region of Gen V, Chandelure is a great counter for Mewtwo. One of the best Ghost and Fire types in the game, it resists Ice, Fire, and Fighting type moves, and it has no weaknesses this Mewtwo can exploit. Even better, its first stage, Litwick has been featured in multiple events, including both 2019 and 2020's Halloween events, and can even be hatched from Eggs right now. Just make sure your Chandelure knows its Ghost type moves Hex and Shadow Ball, as opposed to its Fire type moves.

Darkrai

A Mythical Pokémon originally encountered in the Sinnoh region, Darkrai may look like a Ghost, but it's actually a pure Dark type. This means it's super resistant to Psychic type moves and the only move you'll have to worry about is Focus Blast. Although it is a Mythical type, Darkrai has had widespread availability, with several runs in Raids and even being a Pokémon Go Battle League reward encounter, so you probably already have at least one powered up. Snarl and Dark Pulse are the ideal moves for Darkrai.

Yveltal

The Legendary mascot of Pokémon Y, Yveltal performs great against Mewtwo, especially when paired with Mega Houndoom or Mega Gyarados. This Dark and Flying type will take super effective damage from Mewtwo's Electric and Ice type attacks, but resists Psychic type damage and it's quite the tank. Although Yveltal has only had one run in Raids so far, it was recent so most active players already have at least one or two ready for this Raid. Snarl and Dark Pulse are the moves you'll want your Yveltal to know going up against Mewtwo.

Mewtwo

Ironically enough, Mewtwo can be a great counter for itself, thanks to the Legacy move Shadow Ball. While the Mewtwo you're fighting in Raids now won't have access to this incredible Ghost type move, you may already have one that has this move or an Elite TM to get it. Mewtwo takes reduced damage from Psychic type moves and brings no relevant weaknesses to this fight, meaning it's also super sturdy. If you are bringing Mewtwo to this Raid, pair Psycho Cut and Shadow Ball to deal the maximum damage. However, if your Mewtwo doesn't know Shadow Ball, best to leave it at home, and if your Mewtwo knows Psystrike, don't TM this move away. Psystrike is also a Legacy move and Mewtwo's best Psychic attack.

Weavile

Originally discovered in the Sinnoh region of Gen IV, Weavile is a great counter for Mewtwo that's also readily accessible. It's first stage, Sneasal is a common Gen II Pokémon that has also been featured in events and as a Shadow Pokémon, so you probably already have a couple in your collection. As a Dark and Ice type, Weavile takes reduced damage from Ice and Psychic, but double damage from Fire and quad damage from Fighting. If you're bringing Weavile to this fight, you'll want it to know Snarl and Foul Play.

Hydreigon

A pseudo-Legendary originally encountered in the Unova region of Gen V, Hydreigon performs well in this Raid. As a Dark and Dragon type, it takes reduced damage from Psychic, Fire, and Electric, but double from Fighting and Ice. However, despite its first stage, Deino, being featured in events, Eggs, and even as a Pokémon Go Battle League reward encounter, Deino are still quite rare, so many players don't have the Candy to power up their Hydreigon. Still, if you have one, you'll want Bite and Dark Pulse for the moveset.

Back ups?

Although most players will be able to make a team of the best counters, if you're finding a gap in your team, there are plenty of back ups who work well in larger groups. Just make sure you're dodging and any of the following could be a decent back up:

  • Gengar with Shadow Claw and Shadow Ball
  • Tyranitar with Bite and Crunch
  • Mega Beedrill with Bug Bit and X-Scissor
  • Genesect with Fury Cutter and X-Scissor
  • Mega Blastoise with Bite and Hydro Cannon
  • Banette with Shadow Claw and Shadow Ball
  • Houndoom with Snarl and Foul Play
  • Absol with Snarl and Dark Pulse
  • Pinsir with Bug Bite and X-Scissor
  • Bisharp with Snarl and Dark Pulse
  • Mismagius with Hex and Shadow Ball
  • Reshiram with Fire Fang and Crunch
  • Krookodile with Snarl and Crunch
  • Raikou with Thunder Shock and Shadow Ball
  • Zekrom with Dragon Breath and Crunch
  • Mega Manectric with Snarl and Wild Charge
  • Escalavier with Bug Bite and Mega Horn

Shadow Pokémon

The rebalance of Shadow Pokémon rescued from Team GO Rocket make them excellent glass cannons. Not only are their stats boosted, but during special events or with Elite TMs, it's possible to change their moves. If you happen to have any of the following Pokémon with the right moveset, they will work very well in this Raid:

  • Shadow Mewtwo with Psycho Cut and Shadow Ball
  • Shadow Weavile with Snarl and Foul Play
  • Shadow Tyranitar with Bite and Crunch
  • Shadow Houndoom with Snarl and Foul Play
  • Shadow Absol with Snarl and Dark Pulse
  • Shadow Pinsir with Bug Bite and X-Scissor
  • Shadow Raikou with Thunder Shock and Shadow Ball
  • Shadow Mismagius with Hex and Shadow Ball
  • Shadow Alakazam with Psycho Cut and Shadow Ball
  • Shadow Banette with Shadow Claw and Shadow Ball
  • Shadow Sharpedo with Bite and Crunch
  • Shadow Gardevoir with Charge Beam and Shadow Ball

Note: Shadow Mewtwo, Shadow Weavile, and Shadow Tyranitar outperform every non-Mega Pokémon in the best counters list. Shadow Houndoom, Shadow Pinsir, Shadow Absol, Shadow Raikou, Shadow Mismagius, and Shadow Alakazam also perform on par with the other best counters. If you can safely coordinate the use of Mega Gengar, Mega Houndoom, or Mega Beedrill, they will boost Ghost, Dark, and Bug types respectively, making those type Pokémon perform even better.

How many players does it take to beat Mewtwo in Pokémon Go?

While it is possible for three high level Trainers to take out Mewtwo under ideal conditions with the best counters, this is not an easy Raid and Mewtwo's moveset could make it much more difficult. Personally, I'll be aiming for parties of five Trainers or more.

Weather conditions that can impact this Raid include:

  • Wind will boost Mewtwo's Psychic type moves.
  • Cloudy Weather will boost Mewtwo's Fighting type move.
  • Sunny/Clear Weather will boost Mewtwo's Fire type move.
  • Rain will boost Mewtwo's Electric type move and your Bug type counters.
  • Snow will boost Mewtwo's Ice type move.
  • Fog will boost both your Ghost and your Dark type counters.
