The 12-inch MacBook is now a vintage Apple product

What you need to know

  • The 12-inch MacBook is now a vintage Apple product.
  • The laptop was the peak of minimalism for Apple in a laptop.

The 12-inch MacBook paved the way for some and features while introducing unfortunate others.

Earlier today, Apple quietly added the 12-inch MacBook, which was originally released in 2015, to its list of vintage products. As a vintage product, owners of the older MacBook are still eligible to have the laptop serviced at both Apple and the company's wide range of third-party repair shops.

Owners of iPhone, iPad, iPod, Mac, or Apple TV products may obtain service and parts from Apple service providers, including Apple Retail Stores and Independent Repair Providers, for a minimum of 5 years from when Apple last distributed the product for sale.

Service and parts may be obtained for longer, as required by law or for up to 7 years, subject to parts availability. Additionally, Mac notebooks may be eligible for an extended battery-only repair period for up to 10 years from when the product was last distributed for sale, subject to parts availability.

The 12-inch MacBook was a true feat of engineering when it was released and technically still is. The laptop shrunk down the old design of the MacBook Air into a sleeker, smaller design that still packed a Retina Display. The MacBook was also the first Mac to feature only USB-C ports on the sides, ditching the long-present USB-A, HDMI, and SD Card ports. It also sported the infamous Butterfly Keyboard, which plagued many Mac users until Apple finally switched back to the Magic Keyboard with its newer MacBook Air and MacBook Pro.

The port situation has actually remained the same across the MacBook Air and MacBook Pro, but that is expected to change with the upcoming MacBook Pro. According to rumors, Apple is expected to bring back the HDMI and SD Card ports to its redesigned MacBook Pro models which are rumored to be announced this fall.
