This Easter Bunny is tough!
In honor of Easter Sunday, Mega Lopunny will make its debut in Pokémon Go on April 4. Other spring-themed Pokémon will be appearing in raids soon, and iMore has all the guides you need to defeat them. Since this will be your first chance to defeat Mega Lopunny, here's everything you need to know to prepare for the fight. Who is Mega Lopunny in Pokémon Go?
The Generation 4 Pokémon Lopbunny is an evolution of the Rabbit Pokémon Buneary, with a Mega version that's been around since Pokémon Sun and Pokémon Moon, though has only appeared in Tier 3 Raids in Pokémon Go before now. The shiny version has pink and brown fur instead of the standard brown and tan.
While it's pretty cute, Lopunny isn't particularly useful as it's a Normal Pokémon and doesn't have an impressive moveset. However, the Mega version of Lopunny is also a Fighting type so that should be a big upgrade.
What are the best counters for Mega Lopunny in Pokémon Go
As a Normal and Fighting type, Mega Lopunny can deal Normal, Fighting, and Fire damage. It's vulnerable to Fairy, Fighting, Flying, and Psychic attacks, resistant to Bug, Dark, and Rock, and very resistant to Ghost attacks. That means you have plenty of great options to take into battle.
Mewtwo
One of the original Legendary Pokémon and star of multiple movies, the artificially created Mewtwo has always been one of the most popular and powerful Pokémon in the franchise. He returned to Five Star Raids for 10 days in February so if you were able to capture him, he's the best non-Shadow counter you can use against Lopbunny. The Psychic Pokémon will take half damage from Lopunny's Fighting attacks and will do massive damage with Confusion and Psystrike. Psycho Cut will be almost as good for a quick move. If you don't have an Elite TM to get Psystrike, you can get by with Psychic.
Mega Pidgeot
Mega Pidgeot was one of the first Mega Evolution options added to Pokémon Go, so most players who've been playing for a while already have one they've Mega Evolved already. If you don't have one, try to grab one soon. Mega Pidgeot can be pretty easily taken down with just two people using powerful Rock and Electric Pokémon. The Normal and Flying Pokémon is strong against Mega Lopunny's fighting attacks and its Flying attacks will do extra damage. Air Slash and Brave Bird are the ideal moveset.
Latios or Latias
The Legendary Dragon and Psychic Pokémon Latios and Latias were part of Five Star Raids in February, so if you were able to capture one then it should serve you well in this fight. While the two are slightly different in that Latios can do Grass damage and Latias can do Fairy and Electric, you're actually best off with the Psychic moves they both share: Zen Headbutt and Psychic. They'll also be able to survive for a while thanks to taking half damage from Fighting and Fire attacks.
Conkeldurr
The Fighting Pokémon is the final evolution of Timburr from Unova and is a bit rare since getting it to its final form requires trading or a whopping 200 candy. If you have it, you'll be able to pummel Lopunny with Counter and Dynamic Punch. That's generally the highest DPS combination for the Pokémon so you'll also be able to use it to good effect in other battles against Normal types.
Moltres
The mascot of Team Valor, Moltres was part of Legendary Raids for nine days in February as part of the Pokémon 25th Anniversary celebration. If you were able to pick one up then or in one of its previous appearances, you'll benefit from the Legendary bird's resistance to Fighting and Fire type attacks. The best moveset is Wing Attack and Sky Attack, but Fire Spin is almost as good for a quick move since it does higher DPS even though it won't hit Lopbunny's Flying vulnerability. Sky Attack requires an Elite TM, but is really worth it since it's dominantly Moltres' highest DPS charged attack.
Metagross
The Iron Leg Pokémon Metagross is the final evolution of Beldum and can also be caught in raids. Hopefully, you got a good one and all the candy you need to evolve and power it up on March 14 when Beldum was featured in a Steel and Psychic Incense Day. It's resistant to Mega Lopunny's Normal attacks and will dish out damage with the combination of Zen Headbut and Psychic. If you did evolve Metagross during the Incense event be sure you don't swap out its charge attack since the Meteor Mash you were able to get then is overall better DPS in most fights.
Mega Charizard Y
While many players prefer Mega Charizard X because it's a Dragon type, the Fire and Flying Mega Charizard Y is the one you'll want to use against Mega Lopunny. It's resistant to Lopunny's Fire and Fighting attacks and will deal extra damage with the quick Flying attacks Air Slash or Wing Attack. Blast Burn is its best charge attack, but if you don't have an Elite TM to change it, Overheat also works fine.
Gardevoir
The final evolution of Ralts can be caught from Raids. Hopefully, you picked up a few and plenty of candy for them during the 2021 Valentine's Day event. The Psychic and Fairy Pokémon will take reduced damage from Lopunny's Fighting attacks and hit its vulnerability with Confusion and Psychic. If you evolved it during the Valentine's Day event and have the charged attack Synchronoise, that will also work nicely.
Machamp
The Gen I Fighting Pokémon Machamp is the final evolution of Machop and can also be caught in raid battles. Since its pretty common, has been in the game since the beginning, and is one of the best Fighting Pokémon out there, you probably already have a good one in your collection. Counter and Dynamic Punch are its best moves in this and most other fights.
Back ups?
Although most players will be able to make a team of the best counters, if you're finding a gap in your team, there are plenty of back ups who work well in larger groups. Just make sure you're dodging and any of the following could be a decent back up:
- Lucario with Counter and Aura Sphere
- Gallade with Confusion and Psychic
- Alakazam with Confusion and Psychic
- Espeon with Confusion and Psychic
- Rayquaza with Air Slash and Aerial Ace
- Ho-Oh with Extrasensory and Brave Bird
- Zapdos with Thunder Shock and Drill Peck
- Hariyama with Counter and Dynamic Punch
- Lugia with Extrasensory and Aeroblast
- Exeggutor with Extrasensory and Psychic
Shadow Pokémon?
The rebalance of Shadow Pokémon rescued from Team GO Rocket make them excellent glass cannons. Not only are their stats boosted, but during special events or with Elite TMs, it's possible to change their moves. If you happen to have any of the following Pokémon with the right moveset, they will work very well in this Raid:
- Shadow Mewtwo with Confusion and Psystrike
- Shadow Metagross with Zen Headbutt and Psychic
- Shadow Moltres with Wing Attack and Sky Attack
- Shadow Alakazam with Confusion and Psychic
- Shadow Gardevoir with Confusion and Psychic
- Shadow Gallade with Confusion and Psychic
- Shadow Zapdos with Thunder Shock and Drill Peck
Note: Shadow Mewtwo outperforms every other Pokémon in the best counters list. Shadow Metagross, Shadow Moltres, and Shadow Alakazam also perform on par with the other best counters.
How many players does it take to beat Mega Lopunny in Pokémon Go?
It's always better to have as big a party as possible for Mega raids so be sure to invite plenty of friends. Luckily Lopunny's not particularly hard so if you've got a strong group, you should be able to take it down with three players.
Weather conditions that can impact this Raid include:
- Cloudy weather will boost Mega Lopunny's Fighting type attacks as well as your Fighting and Fairy type counters.
- Partially Cloudy weather will boost Mega Lopunny's Normal type attacks.
- Sunny/Clear weather will boost Mega Lopunny's Fire attack.
- Windy conditions will boost your Flying and Psychic counters.
