Some new MacBook Pro SD card readers are struggling to read SD cards

What you need to know

  • Some new MacBook Pro owners report that their SD cards are not being read correctly when inserted into their machines.
  • Users report slow transfers, Finder crashes, and more.

Some cards crash Finder, others transfer data more slowly than expected.

Apple's new 14 and 16-inch MacBook Pro brings SD cards back to the Mac, but it isn't all sunshine and rainbows — because not all SD cards appear to work properly and there's little explanation as to why.

According to a MacRumors report, multiple people have posted to a thread in its forums to report that some SD cards don't appear to work correctly when inserted into the MacBook Pro's slot. Some cards reportedly cause Finder to crash, while others are able to transfer data but at a speed much slower than expected.

Same issues with 14" M1 Pro. Just seems to be super flakey and inconsistent. Half the time it'll recognize the card successfully (though it takes anywhere from 30s to 1m) and half the time it'll throw an error. These are all Sandisk Ultra cards, both XC and HC, that were formatted in my camera. I tried reformatting them w/ the MBP and that didn't seem to make a difference. All my cards work as expected in my 3 other USB card readers.

Worryingly, there doesn't appear a pattern to much of what people are reporting but there might be a sliver of light at the end of the tunnel. Some people who have contacted Apple have been told that the company knows of the problem and that a fix is coming via a software update. Unfortunately, no timescale has been given as to when that will be released and while some note that the issue is more likely to occur with older cards, the lack of predictability is a problem right now.

The new machines are among the best Macs the company has ever made, especially for professionals. But non-functional SD card slots will definitely temper the excitement of a new machine somewhat. Fingers crossed for a quick fix. If you own a new MacBook Pro and are suffering from this issue, reach out to Apple and add your voice to the chorus — the more Apple is aware of the issue, the better.

Apple brings Apple Configurator app to the iPhone

What you need to know

  • Apple has brought its Apple Configurator app to the iPhone.
  • The app allows administrators to enroll newer Macs in Apple Business Manager or Apple School Manager.

Enrolling Macs is getting a lot easier.

Today, Apple launched the Apple Configurator app for the iPhone. The app, which was already available on the Mac, makes it even easier for administrators to set up a Mac in Apple Business Manager or Apple School Manager.

Apple does say that, in order to use the iPhone app, the Mac will need either a T2 Security Chip (which as released in 2018) or one of the new Apple silicon chips the company rolled out in 2020. You can learn more about the app below:

Apple Configurator for iPhone makes it easy to assign any Mac with the T2 Security Chip or Apple silicon to your organization in Apple Business Manager or Apple School Manager so that you can take advantage of Automated Device Enrollment.

Once signed into Apple Configurator with your organization Managed Apple ID with the Device Enrollment Manager role, you can provide a network configuration to the Mac by sharing the iPhone's network configuration or by choosing a configuration profile to install on the Mac.

To assign a Mac to your organization, bring the iPhone running Apple Configurator near a Mac showing the country picker in Setup Assistant and scan the image or manually enter the six-digit PIN. After the Mac is assigned to the organization, it appears in an 'Added by Apple Configurator' MDM server placeholder in Apple School Manager or Apple Business Manager; the Administrator or Device Enrollment Manager can then assign it to an MDM server for Automated Device Enrollment. The status button in Apple Configurator provides a report of devices which have already been assigned to your organization.

When a device has been assigned and enrolled in this way, it behaves like any other device enrolled using Automated Device Enrollment, including mandatory supervision and MDM enrollment. The only difference is that the user has a 30-day provisional period to remove the device from the organization, supervision, and MDM.

The Apple Configurator app for iPhone is available to download for free from the App Store.

Tile's new owner is selling its customer's location data

What you need to know

  • Tile's parent company Life360 is reportedly selling its customer's location data.
  • The report alleges that the company shares precise location data with a number of data brokers.
  • Tile announced it was acquired by Life360 last month.

That is not a good look when you're competing with AirTag.

Last month, AirTag competitor Tile announced that it was being acquired by the family safety company Life360. Now, a report from The Markup alleges that Tile's new parent company is sharing the location data of all of its customers with "virtually anyone who wants to buy it."

Through interviews with two former employees of the company, along with two individuals who formerly worked at location data brokers Cuebiq and X-Mode, The Markup discovered that the app acts as a firehose of data for a controversial industry that has operated in the shadows with few safeguards to prevent the misuse of this sensitive information. The former employees spoke with The Markup on the condition that we not use their names, as they are all still employed in the data industry. They said they agreed to talk because of concerns with the location data industry's security and privacy and a desire to shed more light on the opaque location data economy. All of them described Life360 as one of the largest sources of data for the industry.

When asked for a statement, Life360 founder and CEO Chris Hulls acknowledged that the company does share certain data in order to make certain levels of its service free to its customers.

"We have no means to confirm or deny the accuracy" of whether Life360 is among the largest sources of data for the industry. We see data as an important part of our business model that allows us to keep the core Life360 services free for the majority of our users, including features that have improved driver safety and saved numerous lives."

The practice, however privacy-invasive, sets up Tile for some major distrust with its customers who, by comparison, can purchase an AirTag from Apple and know that the company is not sharing their data at all. Justin Sherman, Duke Tech Policy Lab fellow, nailed it when he said that "Families probably would not like the slogan, 'You can watch where your kids are, and so can anyone who buys this information."

Apple AirTag

Bottom line: For iPhone owners, this is the best item tracker on the market right now. With simple pairing and easy-to-use software, AirTags are a kind excellent Apple product of the same vintage as Apple's AirPod family.

All current Raid Bosses in Pokémon Go December 2021

Here's every Pokémon you can challenge in Pokémon Go Raids right now.

While you can catch plenty of Pokémon in the wild and hatch plenty of Pokémon in Eggs in Pokémon Go, Raid Battles are where you get some of the best and most powerful Pokémon in the game. While some of the Raid bosses are common and weak, Raids are also one of few ways to encounter Legendary Pokémon, Mega Pokémon, and certain rare species.

Which Pokémon, you ask? Well, the line-up changes pretty often. Each new event brings new and different Raid Bosses, and Niantic frequently changes them up just for fun. Lucky for you, we've got the whole list right here, and be sure to chek out our best Pokémon Go accessories so you're fully equipped on your Pokémon Journey!

  • Note: Any Pokémon with the potential to be Shiny is indicated by an asterisk.

Mega Raids in Pokémon Go

On August 27, 2020, Niantic introduced Mega Evolution and with it Mega Raids. Mega Raids are a class unto themselves, providing some of the most challenging battles yet. Mega Pokémon get a massive stat boost, and in some cases new typing as well. Starting June 1, 2021, only one Pokémon will be appearing in Mega Raids at a time.

If you need help with December's Mega Raids, we have the following guides:

After completing any of these Mega Raids, you will be rewarded with the chance to catch the normal version of that Pokémon, as well as a bunch of Mega Energy - the species specific currency used to Mega Evolve your own Pokémon. The amount of Mega Energy you win is based on how quickly you can complete the Mega Raid so you want to invite as many people as possible to these Raids. Additionally, Mega Raids can give you Shiny Pokémon, unlike encountering these evolved Pokémon normally.

Like other Raids, Mega Raids also rotate out. Currently, you cannot battle in the following Mega Raids right now:

Five Star Raids in Pokémon Go

The Five Star tier is typically reserved for Legendary Pokémon and usually the most sought after of public Raids. They're more difficult to beat than lower star ratings, but if you have enough players to do it, the rewards at this level are the best. Right now, Reshiram and Zekrom have taken over Legendary Raids with their Shiny forms available for the first time. Starting December 16, 2021, Kyurem will return to Legendary Raids and it will also have its Shiny form available.

Additionally, if you want to prep your counters in advanced, you can find all of our Legendary and Mythical Raid guides here:

Three Star Raids in Pokémon Go

Three Star Raids are fairly easy to take down, and many high-level players can do them with just one or two buddies. Still, they're worth a decent chunk of XP and other rewards. The current line up of Three Star Raid Bosses include:

  • Electabuzz* (2 Trainers)
  • Magmar* (1+ Trainer)
  • Lapras* (2 Trainers)
  • Dragonite (2 Trainers)
  • Druddigon* (2 Trainers)

One Star Raids in Pokémon Go

Just about any player able to Raid can solo a One Star. These are all super easy, and unless this is one of your very first Raids, you'll spend more time waiting on the counter for the battle to start than you'll actually spend in the battle itself. However, if you need to complete a lot of Raids fast, these are the ones you want to aim for. Plus, they provide the easiest way to get some of the rarer first stage Pokémon.

  • Tynamo
  • Litwick
  • Cubchoo*
  • Golett*
  • Deino*

Raid Invitations and Remote Raids in Pokémon Go

As the global pandemic slowed Pokémon Go play and Raids in particular during the early part of 2020, Niantic began to implement new features to make Raids more accessible. Now Trainers can purchase Remote Raid Passes, which allow them to take part in Raids that aren't within range for a normal Raid Pass. These Remote Raid Passes will let you join in any Raid you can see on the screen. Additionally, Remote Raid Passes allow you to join into any Raid a Friend invites you to. Raid Invitations were added shortly after Remote Raid Passes, allowing Trainers to invite up to five of their Friends to join in a Raid from anywhere in the world.

EX Raids in Pokémon Go

An Exclusive or EX Raid is a special sort of Raid you can only participate in by invitation. Invitations are given to players who battle at EX eligible Gyms during a time of high traffic with some small bit of luck on top. Otherwise, invitations can be shared between Ultra and Best Friends. If you have a high-level friend who gets one, they can invite you to the EX Raid as well. The last EX Raid Boss was Regigigas, the leader of the Regi Titans Trio; however, Niantic has currently suspended EX Raids in the interests of public health concerns.

No more Four and Two Star Raids in Pokémon Go

Prior to Mega Raids being released, Pokémon Go had two other Raid types: Four Star Raids and Two Star Raids. Four Star Raids were combined with Three Star Raids, while Two Star Raids were combined with One Star Raids. The difficulty remained at Three and One Star levels, while increasing the rewards, making all of these battles more accessible.

Raid Questions?

Do you have any questions about which Pokémon are in Raids right now? Is there a Pokémon you're hoping will come to the line up next? Drop us a comment below, and be sure to check guide our Complete Pokédex, to be sure you're well equipped for your Pokémon journey!

Here's what you have to do to get Cresselia in Pokémon BDSP

It can be pretty tricky catching Cresselia in BDSP. Here's how to do it.

Pokémon games are incredibly fun and one of the reasons why is that there's always plenty to do after you've beaten the main game. For example, Cresselia is a special Legendary Pokémon that you can only catch in the Brilliant Diamond and Shining Pearl post-game. It's one of the trickier creatures to get since it randomly flits around the map like Mesprit. However, if you're patient, you'll be able to catch it and add it to your Pokédex once you've unlocked it.

How to unlock Cresselia in Brilliant Diamond and Shining Pearl

  1. Beat the Elite Four and return to Twinleaf town after the credits have rolled.
  2. Fly to Canalave Island.

  3. Walk into the house next to the pier.
  4. Talk to the mother and child.

  5. Now exit the house and talk to the Sailor.
  6. Agree to go to Fullmoon Island.
  7. Walk to the right and enter the forest.

  8. You'll see Cresselia just sitting there chilling in the clearing. Go up to it and press the A button to interact with it.
  9. Cresselia will flee and leave behind a Luna Feather. Pick up the Luna Feather.

  10. Return to Canalave City. You can either use Fly or go back to the sailor to do this.
  11. Enter the Sailor's house and talk to the child.

  12. The Child will wake up and the sailor will thank you. Leave the house.
  13. Now open your Pokétch by pressing the R button and use the Marking Map app to locate Cresselia.

    • If you don't already have the Marking Map app, you can get it by entering the Pokétch Company Building in Jubilife City and talking with the president on the ground floor. He'll only give it to you if you have at least three gym badges.

Now that Cresselia is unlocked, you have to go through the task of hunting it down and catching it. Continue to the next section for help with that.

How to catch Cresselia in Brilliant Diamond and Shining Pearl

Cresselia is a levitating Psychic-type and will be level 50 when you encounter it in the wild. So, make sure you have appropriate level Pokémon on your team to take its health down instead of one-shot KOing it.

First off, if you haven't done so yet, make sure to change your saving settings to manual saves. This is important in case you accidentally knock Cresselia out instead of catching it. You switch to manual saves by pressing the X button to open your menu then selecting Options. Then, scroll down to Autosave and select off. Now, save your game before continuing on.

Next, take a moment to stock up on Quick Balls and Ultra Balls if you don't already have enough. I recommend at least 30 of each if you can swing it.

Now that you have all of your resources, you can go and find it. However, Just like Mesprit, Cresselia will move to a new location every time you yourself move to a new location on the Sinnoh map. So to catch it, I find it best to find the border between two routes and go back and forth until it shows up in the route I'm on, as seen in the Marking Map app. I personally prefer to go to Route 212 to do this, just south of Hearthome City. Note that if you have two moving Legendary Pokémon active that both will show up in the app.

When Cresselia appears on the route you're on, head to a patch of grass and run around until you bump into it. Sometimes the first Pokémon you run into will be Cresselia, but other times it might be some other random monster. If the app shows Cresselia is still on your route after leaving the random battle, attempt to find it in the grass again.

Cresselia is much like Abra in that it attempts to run as its first move. However, you're guaranteed to get a turn in before it does this. If you attack it, Cresselia will have the same amount of health the next time you encounter it. So, use a Pokémon to whittle down its health. You want to get it in the red to make capturing easier. It will only be level 50, so use a move that won't knock it out in one hit.

After it flees, you'll want to manually save your game. This ensures that your game remembers that Cresselia's health has gone down and that you can reload if you accidentally knock it out. Continue to track it down and attack it until its health is low. Then, throw Quick Balls or Ultra Balls at it. This might take a long time, so be patient.

After some patience and hard work, you'll eventually add Cresselia to your team and can add it to your party if you wish to.

Shoot for the moon

With some time and dedication, you'll be able to catch Cresselia. Make sure you have plenty of Quick Balls and Ultra Balls handy before chasing it down otherwise you might find yourself in a frustrating situation. Good luck!
